First day postoperative
Well all I can say is I learned the hard way. I as doing well until about 0200 this morning when I woke up in extreme pain. Unfortunately I didn't like the way the dilaudid made me feel so I didn't use my pain medication often enought. I took my nurses advise (I'm a nurse too) and use my PCA as ordered and did much better until about 1500 and got a migraine. Needless to say the dilaudid did nothing for it. The doc stopped my dilaudid PCA and gave me some tordal. This helped the migraine some but it hasn't completely resolved it. Any suggestions. Usually I need Tylenol #3 by he won't give it to me. Other than that it has been a good day.
Yes it was Toradol but it was given IV. Also it was gastric bypass doc that ordered it so I think he should know what was doing. My understanding the reason you can't take NSAIDs is the effect on the stomach and seeing as I took it IV it wouldn't effect my stomach. If I am misunderstanding the reasoning please let me know. Thank you for bring it to my attention.

The way I understand it it doesn't matter how the NSAIDs are delivered, they can still cause problems.
Can you ask for morphine instead of the dilaudid? I get horrible, horrible nausea with dilaudid, and got morphine post-op.
I hope you're feeling better soon!

You are correct, the problem with NSAIDS is the effect on the stomach and they have the SAME effect no matter how you take them. When NSAIDS enter your blood stream, they cause the lining of your stomach - the old stomach and the pouch - to thin out, which can cause ulcers. Taking them by IV gets them right into your bloodstream, where they have that effect. So yes, it seems you misunderstood how NSAIDS work.
I understand your surgeon ordered the NSAIDS for you, but you might want to reconsider using them for pain and requesting a different, safer medication instead.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
