Our kids/the surgery/eating in general

I didn't mean to come off as a healthy food freak or anything. I guess I'm trying to teach them moderation. If we go to the movies we get popcorn, just not the gigantic tub, even if it is a better deal and I don't add more butter. I try and bake my own cookies and freeze the extra ones or make my own pizza dough for them because I know what's in it. I know it's not possible to do all the time or for everyone, but I do what I can. My kids aren't overweight at this point, and I hope to keep it that way. It just seems like obesity runs in families. My maternal grandma, mom, two aunts and cousins all struggle with weight. I'm the only one who got to be MO.  My mother in law is anorexic and has been all her life. Due to her illness she has lost her teeth and needed to get dentures in her 40's and she has wasted awaynso much that she is in a wheel chair. So I'm very sacred that my kids will battle these weight related problems, so I'm trying hard to teach them healthy habits. It's really tough.

Well, I don't keep junk food in the house. I'm not militant about it. But the reality is there is NO shortage of it anywhere else, but it doesn't have a place in my house. My kids love fruits and veggies and they get things like jello sf pudding for deserts (which is not an every day thing, more like a once a week). My kids don't even ask for desert.

Which is the way i want it. Our whole society eats crap all the time, and i want my kids to be healthier then that.

I don't talk about dieting and that sort of thing. I talk about making good choices, eating healthy, keeping our body strong, etc. I am teaching food is for nourishment, not what we go to for pleasure. I am working on teaching a healthy relationship with food.

I guess I am confused over what you are concerned about?  Is it because she used the word diet.  I don't have a problem with that word.  By definition it means the food or drink an animal or person eats.  You have chosen to eat a healthy diet in your house.  Other families have chosen to eat an unhealthy diet.  When I say I am on a diet  I mean I am choosing to eat healthy things rather than junkfood.  If my 13 year old daughter (who eats like a horse and barely weighs 70 pounds) came home and said she needed to lose weight because she is fat I would be concerned.  I would also be concerned if she started weighing herself everyday and obsessing over her weight.

We don't have dessert every night in our house.  If anything I cut up some berries call it dessert.  We don't keep junk food in our house.  As someone else pointed out, they are getting it everywhere else.  My kids want a lot of things other kids get.  Just because they want a DS or to sit around and watch TV all day doesn't mean I am going to let them.  I think kids need to learn that these are special things that they don't need all the time.

oddly enough we had this exact conversation with a group of friends last night. it was split down the middle. 2 of them talked about how they can't learn to make good choices unless they have the opportunity to make them.

i just think it's flawed logic. i'm not going to keep drugs or cigarettes around the house just so my kids can make the good choice not to take them. it's not necessary to the decision making process.
