Funny conversation at work...
I was talking to this one girl for a minute at my desk. I was asking her insurance questions (she works in insurance billing).
She said, "I can't believe you are going to have the WLS".
I said "Yes, I am very excited about it and want this for myself."
She said, "I know 5 people that died doing that surgery"
I said, "Who were they and where did they get it done?" because I know the surgeon I am dealing with never lost a patient.
She said, "I don't remember who, but I just know people that have died doing it", one bled to death on the table, one coded blue,..."
I said, "hum, I know there are complications that can happen, but that is with every surgery"...
She said, "and you better get all the life insurance you will ever need before surgery because you can not purchase it after you have WLS!".
I said, "why is that?" She told me that it was because so many people have life threatening things go wrong with the surgeries. She finally left my desk- TG!!
What the heck...She is definately hearing stories and retelling them as facts. I had to laugh when she left. It just struck me as comical because she is clueless, but yet thinks she knows everything. I told her I am aware of the complications and still think this is best for me :)

Not that you're going to need life insurance, but there is actually some truth to that.... wls is an exclusion for many companies. I am trying to get some, with difficulty.

There is a reason they have us go through so many hoops beforehand! So that doesn't happen to us! This woman has no clue. The docs send us for a ton of tests beforehand, all to confirm that you are in the physical condition to have this surgery. You should leave some statistics on her desk about people who die with 5-10 years with the surgery, and the same risk-type without the surgery!!! That might open her eyes.

I love that you asked for specifics about those that she knew who had died. That usually throws them. Most often they don't know anyone personally who died but have heard of a friend of a friend who's cousin's dog heard from the neighbor's cat that they lady in apartment 2B had died after WLS.
Sometimes they may actually know someone who has died but I have never met anyone. I know that some do know people who have regained after surgery. I just try to remind them that everyone's jouney is different.
