Strange comment from a friend

I am still pre-op and my surgery is on May 22nd. I have not told very many people other than my kids, husband, and a couple of select friends. Today I told a friend/co-worker about my surgery and her comment was that she was happy for me and would be supportive, but then she stated "you know most people who have that surgery, once they lose their weight they become meth adicts to stay skinny" I was like whatever, I do not believe that in a bit. This just shows me how there is such a lack of knowledge of others who are not having nor need to have this type of surgery. I am totally excited to start this journey and so far my pre-op diet is going well (started today). I then told her that her comment re-confirmed my decision not to tell many people because I do not want their negativity at this point in my journey (well I don't ever want their negativity for that matter, but I know there will be some). Anyway I just thought that was probably one of the strangest comments for her to make.

It will hurt. It will take time. It will require dedication. It will require willpower. It requires sacrifice. There will be temptation. But, I promise you, when you reach your goal, it's WORTH IT! (Author Unknown). I feel this sums up my ongoing journey to a healthier me!

I don't know any meth addicts but I doubt they spend their money on protein drinks.

Perhaps she was telling you so you could save money for your pipe??????? I really wonder if she was listening to the nonsense that was coming from her mouth.

Don't let her comments keep you from being open. You said it yourself. She lacks knowledge.

Wow, that IS bizarre. If there's any truth to it at all (in her head) its because she knows ONE post-op who did happen to develop a meth habit and might have said, "Oh, everyone does it."

But that's a stretch. My guess is that she's just repeating some nonsense she heard somewhere else.

Don't let it bother you. I did the same thing--only told a handful of people. I've told more as I've progressed and everyone's been surprisingly supportive, even the ones I didn't think would be. It's your journey and you're entitled to tell anyone you feel comfortable telling.

For what it's worth, I do hope you become comfortable enough eventually to tell more people, because it's education and good examples that will help enlighten the general public and keep "Everyone becomes a meth head" comments at bay. Because that's just silly. Everyone knows we all prefer heroin. It's far more sexy.

...Now, where did I put my spoon...?

Probably she confused meth with other amphetamines, which are becoming more and more common among WLS patients to combat regain, and are, of course, addictive.  See my response below.

Ugh.  Why don't people learn to think before they speak?  When I told my sisters I was having surgery, my youngest sister basically said if I believed in my mind to be fat, or to have PCOS, then I'll be fat and have PCOS.  If I thought in my mind I was skinny, I'd be skinny.

Ummm yah.  She has stepped off the pier into the oblivion I call crazyland. lol
I'm sorry your friend said what she did.  I hear, from the people I tell, that they know someone who had it and gained all their weight back.

Like they think the surgery didn't work or something.  Those types of comments make me angry and more determined to make this work.
