Protein question

I placed a call to my doctors office regarding when to drink protein shakes.  I was informed by his nurse that I should be getting most of my protein from food not from shakes.  I am not even three weeks post-op and was just curious how many people were able to get 60-80grams of protein consumed with food alone.  From what I have read, a lot of people remained on protein shakes for some time after surgery and sometimes even after years, they have a protein shake at times.  If this is possible, please give me some ideas.  I am on a pureed diet until the end of May when I have my next appointment with my surgeon.  I have tried to eat eggs, it didn't work.  I am able to eat cottage cheese and skim milk.  I haven't tried any meat pureed, as I was sure that would be a good idea if I had such a problem with eggs.  Thank you for your help in this matter.

WOW that is some serious moving along.  I am almost 6 months out.  I still drink a Celebrate shake w vitamins and calcium once a day.  sometimes a second one just in case i don' t feel i hit my protein limits.  I still can only do about 6oz of food at time.

Have you tried beans or chili?  Chicken salad very mushy?  Get your protein in though..no matter how you have to do it.

I was at least six months out before I could get enough protein from food.  Even now, more than three years post op, I use shakes sometimes.  If you're able to get enough protein from food, then that's great.  If you need shakes to help you, then I think you should use shakes.

Are you sure you heard correctly? Do you have a nutritionist? I would speak to him/her about this. It just does not sound right so early on.

I have never had a shake or protien bars. It's not in my plan. I just eat dense protien, and at the beggining I had cheese, deli meats, shrimp, canned tuna or chicken and yogurts. So far I've been doing good.

wow things difffer so much from dr. to dr  .. I was just thinking if I relied on my food alone so far would be about 6 +12 = 18.... that was my egg for breakfast, and my lunchmeat for lunch (if it was 12)... I have been sipping on  syntax nectar lemonaid all morning if I FINISH it.. it will be an 20 grams,  so what could I possibly have for dinner to make up the rest ?  oh.. making chicken fajattias.. I will eat only the chicken.

It sounds like you answered your own question. If you can't get enough from food you have to use shakes to make sure you are getting enough protein.

I am 6mos out and I have a protein drink in the AM and PM - I can't eat enough to get 70 grams of protein in just food alone.
I track my calories on sparkpeople and that also tracks my protein and I really do need those drinks to make my goal.

I was told by both my dietitian and my surgeon that the protein drinks will be my main source of protein and that food will be my "supplement."

I am getting mine in with food and I am 3 weeks out today.  Now I can't even imagine being on puree for 6+ weeks; mine was 10 days.  I can eat soft foods including ground meats and well chewed meats.  No fresh fruits of veggies for 2 more months.

I got 66.6 today from chicken breast (3oz/25.1g protein), ground beef patty (3.6oz/21g protein), 2 string cheese sticks(12g protein), 1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt (6.5g protein), Blue Bunny No Sugar Added Sweet Freedom Snack Size Ice Cream Bar 2oz (2g protein). I also had a SF Pineapple Popsicle but that has no protein, just 15 calories.  This was a total of 794 calories.  I also drank 70oz water with SF water flavorer.

The beef was a calorie killer with just around 300 calories.  I will be selecting a lower calorie option in the future.  This was the most calories I have had in a day since surgery.  I usually average 650/day.
