What has been difficult for me is dealing with people now telling me fat jokes face to face, because I'm obviously part of the club that is allowed to enjoy those jokes now.... NOT.  People can be idiots about all sort of things.

What bothers me most is the fact that people who tell fat jokes are kicking the dog while it's down.
I can't imagine there are a whole lot of people out there who are obese and proud of it. I feel safe in saying that the majority of us probably struggle quite a bit with our image and weight issues. So to deliver attacks against a fat person's weight is just reinforcing something they probably already hate about themselves. And that's despicably lowbrow. To use it as humor on national television is even lower.

I don't think it's OK to make fun of someone's appearance or health problems, ever.  Are fat jokes ever funny?  Well, I've heard a few that did strike me as kind of funny.  But that doesn't make them OK.  Just like jokes about someone's race or religion would not be OK even if they struck you as funny.

Maybe a third of my facebook friends are lawyers scattered about the country.  Some of them I have never met, who were added because we had a great number of mutual friends.  Last week, a woman who practices private criminal law posted (from the courtroom, even) about three largish district attorneys who were confabbing over counsel tables about going out to eat.  She made a big deal about how fat they were.  All her friends made a big deal about how disgusting it was for fat men to talk with each other about food.

I didn't say anything, because I think that it's impolite to post things on someone's wall if you've never met them or said anything nice on their wall before, but I was really offended.  I think her post said a lot more about her character (not to mention her friend's character) than about these district attorneys.

The whole thing has been on my mind for the last few days.  Yes, fat people are easy targets.  It wouldn't be so bad if these people had a clue about what causes obesity and what to do about it, but they don't.

Well - I was ok with fat jokes with other fat people when I was heavier.  We were sort of all in the same 'club' and it was sort of comiserating with each other.  Now since I'm much smaller - I don't make the jokes and feel a bit uncomfortable when they joke because I don't want to make them feel I'm lauding it over them.  Not sure if this is right or wrong - but it is what it is.

I feel that it is more a "...I can kick my own dog, but no one else can kick my dog..." (I hate that expression, but I don't have a better way to put it) kind of thing...

I can laugh at, make fun of my size, my condition but that right extends no further than me.

I've never encountered anyone with the temerity to be so vicious and rude to my face in re: my obesity and that is probably a good thing...what I fear now is that I may act/react in the moment ignoring the consequences.

If someone were to do to me, to my face, what Letterman is doing in re: Chris Christie, I doubt I would hesitate to beat the living crap out of him and do so to within a fraction of an inch of his life...something I'll need to take up with my therapist...I have a problem with people that are bullies...I applaud those kids who, at some point, realize that the only way to truly neutralize the bully is to fight fire with fire...

Bullies are abusive and I don't think that becoming abusive yourself solves the problem.  I think the way to deal with it is to treat people with dignity and respect.  Wasn't it Ghandi who said something about being the change we wish to see in the world?

I used to work with teenagers and did a lot of work with local schools, helping them develop programs to deal with bullying and training school staff in how to deal with bullies and teaching kids how to deal with bullying.  I think the same things apply to adult bullies, too.

I know it won't always work, but if more people would simply stand up and say "That's not OK," many bullies would stop.  Do you think Letterman would keep making fat jokes if other people working on the show, other guests on the show, some of the sponsors of his show, and some of his family members and friends all told him that making fun of fat people is not OK?  If just a few people complain, he might blow them off.  But if more people spoke up, he'd quit.
