Dumping test?

I agree wth a lot of the other posters here. Actual studies have shown that only 30% of people who have RNY end up being dumpers. Probably more than that think they dump, but part of this is a lack of understanding of what "dumping" really is. Some think it is any sort of digestive distress, any food that doesn't go down well. I'd hesitate to say that probably close to 100% of people who have this surgery have an issue with food that doesn't go down well (eat too fast, not chew well enough, food too dry, etc). But dumping is not just vomiting. It is not just diarrhea. It is not even just feeling bad. It's a response to too much sugar (and fat) "dumping" into the small intestine, which is not used to the presence of so much undigested foods. For a limited number of folks this results in elevated heart rate, a feeling of being unwell, even panic or a sense of dread. For folks who dump, some of them experience nausea or vomiting, and some of them have other digestive side effects whi*****ludes diarhea.

I cannot say honestly if I would have "tested "or not had I been given the opportunity to try. Alas, I was barely 24 hours out of surgery when I was given something in the hospital that made me dump. I am a dumper, big time. Sadly, the knowlege of dumping -- for me at least -- didn't really make a big difference. If I want something that might make me dump, I tend to go for it, just try to keep the serving size beneath my "dump limit". I also have what some call "late dumping" but which is really reactive hypoglycemia, and that is a more serious issue because if my blood sugar crashes too far I might pass out, have seizures, or even if it's really bad, fall into a coma. This is not a desireable situation. What interests me is that dumping itself never stopped me eating what I shouldn't. But the Reactive Hypoglycemia -- even though it has looser rules (no more than 25 g of carbs whereas my regular dumping rules are to keep sugar grams in the single digits)... I haven't dumped hardly at all since I've adjusted for the RH. Controlling for sugar/carb overload makes it easier to not go off-plan. The sensations associated with the RH are far moer worrisome than those with dumping. Dumping actually was a small price to pay for a cookie now and again, but RH is NOT a good price to pay.

Interestingly, as I've moved my snacks from carby to fat and protein, the RH has become completely controlled also.

So anyway, in short (which I never am).... don't test, because it serves no purpose. Make your reality one of a person who dumps. Never test t and you'll never know, but if you assume and live that way, you'll be living the plan and be very unlikely to regain a significant amount of weight.
