The body's delayed reaction to rapid weight loss?

Last night when I got home from work (approx 8 pm with a couple stops en route), I began to feel very light-headed (not dizzy), warm, heart rate was elevated and I was perspiring...with the exception of my heart rate, all other vitals (that I could measure) were "normal"...blood sugar was 102, body temperature was 97.3.

I had already taken in 64+ oz. of fluids with all my vitamin supplements and I had not missed any meals...I had snacked on low-fat cheese earlier and during the drive home I had one of my Quest protein bars, so it wasn't that was low on or missing any nourishment.

This episode, however, was not unfamiliar...I recall having felt exactly the same way approximately 24 years ago after I had been on NutriSystem for a month or two and had lost a great deal of weight rather quickly...

This morning I feel fine, heart rate is back to "normal," blood sugar was 118, body temperature was 97.2.

As it happens, I have my one-month follow up appt today and I will most certainly discuss yesterday evening's incident with my NP.

Has this, or something similar, happened to anyone else, here?

What is the sugar or carb content in a Quest bar?  Sounds like dumping to me.  We didn't have protein bars until probably 3 months out.

Thank you, Price S.!

In a 60g bar, sugar accounts for 3g (5%) and total carbs are 24g (40%).

However, I've been eating them for the past couple weeks without incident...I would think that if I were prone to dumping from the sugar in a Quest bar, it would have occurred long before now, no? Perhaps it was, but if it was, it wasn't all that bad...no vomiting and/or diarrhea (my standard for something being awful).

I can dump one time on something and not another.  Sometime it is the carbs, not just the sugar.  I don't dump much, but I never get diarrhea or vomit.  Just the extreme heart beating that I feel in every inch of me and sick feeling.

From what you had eaten it doesn't seem like you would be having a dumping episode but yet it does sound like mild dumping.

That's really similiar to the way I feel during a mild episode.

I can eat the same thing several times and have no issues and then suddenly...dump time.

I was on the Atkins Diet for 2 yrs and lost 170lbs. My cholesterol became too high (prior to that, it had always been great) so the Dr suggested I switch to low fat diet. Immediately, I got the same symptoms as you described above. It was first on a cup of raisin bran...I'm thinking the raisins caused me to crash. However, it did occur with other things as well. It makes me wonder if Reactive Hypoglycemia is more likely after a high protein/low carb diet rather than just WLS??? Also, I had horrible gas and bloating up until I had WLS and that was since 2005, when I quit doing Atkins.

I would journal any time you are feeling this way to see if there is a pattern. Good luck!

Many post ops do react to sugar alcohols, commonly used in SF foods, including protein bars.  You may not have the same exact reaction every time you eat that food though. It's not uncommon to eat a specific food several times without issue, and then feel ill the next time you eat that same food.  DAVE

Sounds like you dumped on the quest bar. You can dump on something you never dumped on before. I dump on quest bars, even the no sugar alcohol ones.

Like the others said sounds like mild dumping...I dump more on stuff as time goes on, seems I am getting more sensitive to carbs/sugar...but find that occasionally for some reason I have a day where I have say a piece of fruit, something I wouldnt normally dump on at all...I will get a mild case of dumping.
