Mandated WLS benefits from insurance company?????
I sure wish I still had BC/BS of Mass. I had a $15 co-pay for dr visits and no deductibles or co-pays for ANYTHING else in network. I now owe $12K to the Mayo Clinic for my breast cancer treatment. I have been on BC/BS of Georgia since I got off BC/BS of Mass in Sept 09. If I was still under the same plan I'd owe them ZEROI didnt have it long but I loved it when I had it. I even have a WLS exclusion now. I cant believe my luck for having it done in the one year time frame I had when I didn't know it was only going to be that short of time.
I'm actually kind of pinching myself that I'm so lucky to be getting this coverage too. The previous coverage my husband had was with Anthem, and his policy did have the benefits, but with the usual requirements of wanting supervised weight loss for 6 months, etc. So, I was in the middle of doing all of that when his contract was ended with that employer in early February. Luckily, he landed his current job within a week, but the insurance doesn't kick in until June 1st.
We just received all of their enrollment info on Monday and I started looking into the wls portion of it yesterday and couldn't believe my eyes!! I even searched for their policy bulletin online to make sure of the exact wording, and again, it seemed like a cake walk. It sounded too good to be true.
But, I went ahead and scheduled my consult with my surgeon, and that's on the books for June 27th. They are going to call me if they have any cancellations for an earlier appointment in June so we can get the ball rolling sooner. They will do whatever testing they do that day and submit everyting for approval. I asked how long after we received the approval the surgery could be scheduled, and she said maybe within a couple of weeks!
I'm absolutely shocked at how this is turning out - especially since this is something I have been working on since last year and have prepared myself for a denial and the whole appeal process. But, when things are supposed to happen, things come together the way they are supposed to. I just wi**** were this easy for everyone, because there are truly some heartbreaking stories I've read here about what people (including you) have had to go through to get approval for the surgery.

The pre-op counseling is very beneficial so don't bru**** off. Three office visits with a nutritionist is a good way to start. There is a lot to learn before you are ready to leave the hospital with a very altered stomach and so many answers to questions that are going to flood over you once the surgery is over.
You're absolutely right - things will be really different the moment I step out that door. I actually have been preparing for this surgery for 7 months now because the previous insurance my husband had required 6 months of supervision by my pcp. I've also gone to the nut twice, and I think I'm going to see a counselor too. But, there is still so much to learn, and I know I will have those questions. There is a ton to get educated on....
