Interesting, haven't heard of using Tums for that. I'll have to check that out as well.

Do NOT use Tums.  They are calcium carbonate, which we cannot absorb.  We need calcium CITRATE.

Tums have Calcium CARBONATE , we need to take Calcium CITRATE. This must be in 3 divided doses to obtain at least 1500 mg a day.

Correct.  That's because you need lots of stomach acid to break down calcium carbonate but we have very little stomach acid in our pouch.

The calcium citrate chews from BA and capsules from Vitamin Shoppe were what saved me.  The capsules dissolve nicely and feel good going down, the chews are nice for a one dose a day treat.  I hated the chewable lozenges from BA.

I guess I was lucky in going to the bariatric center I went to. There were several required nutrition classes and a notebook full of information: including the facts that RNYers do not absorb B12 orally, and that we must have calcium citrate.

It's kind of dismaying to me when people are given the surgery without the basic knowledge needed to avoid serious problems later. These info holes are the surgeon's / clinic's fault, not the patient's.

My surgeon actually specifically told me to take calcium carbonate.  When I questioned him about it and said I had read that calcium citrate was absorbed better, he said, "Uh, well, yes, that's true."  So, duh.... why tell patients to take carbonate if you know citrate is absorbed better?  I just said, "Well, I think I'll be taking calcium citrate then!"

So Kelly do you think that is why my surgeon is having me to start taking vitamin D now. I had my first labs done a few weeks ago and at my visit is when he told me to start taking 10000 of D. He said all of my labs looked good though.

He may have told you that because nearly all RNY patients need extra D3.  Actually most people do, including those that have not had RNY.  Or maybe he is basing that amount on your labs, I don't know.  You could ask him.

I do know that most RNY patients seem to need at least 10,000 IU D3 a day to maintain a good level - I did a survey (admittedly not very scientific) of a bunch of RNY folks regarding their vitamin D levels and how much D3 they took daily and there were one or two that maintained a good level on just 5000 IU a day and one that somehow had a good level taking NO extra D3, but everyone else needed at least 10,000 IU a day.
