I saw the pain doctor today and she prescribed Gabapentin (Neurontin) for my headaches.  I am wondering because one of the side effects is weight gain.  I just want to hear other people's experience if it helped with pain and what side effects they may have experienced.

I'm sorry, I don't know. I apologize for "jacking" your thread but by any chance do you know of a non-narcotic non-steroidal pain meds because I have aweful monthly period cramps. Tylenol is not good enough, and I wont be able to pop narcotics monthly.

I wish I could help but I have no idea.  When it comes to pain relief us pouchers  are kind of screwed.  I have asked my doctor myself and she did'nt have a clue.

Have you thought of trying a muscle relaxer for your cramps? Might be worth a try.

I'm on it for neuropathy (in my feet) and it has totally taken the neuropathy away.  (It doesn't help my headaches one iota, but everybody is different.)

My weight loss has been fine.  I'm down 57 pounds in 4 months since surgery, which both my doc and I are both happy with.

I have been taking gabapentin for 2 years because of nerve pain from a bulging disk in neck (fixed with surgery).  Still have residual pain and numbness.  I experienced no weight gain issues and it does help with the pain.

My daughter has taken it because she can't sleep because of back pain running down her leg, works good she slept for about 4-5 hrs , without waking BUT she GAINED 20 lbs in a month she said she felt hungry/starving all the time!!!!
You might want to try Topamax , it is the same type of med but has an anerectic affect , I use that for sleep when I don't use valium , try to switch things up. I believe it also is used for headaches.
Good luck.
I know after I lost 160 lbs my doc put me on antidepresants can't remember which one ( think Celexa) and gained 30 lbs in 4 weeks and my doc just told me that was impossible....ummmm REALLY????? and i continued to gain , went off of it and couldn't loose no matter what I did , finally had the band.
Good luck , it may not be worth it

I take gabapentin for back pain- sciatica specifically. It works to alleviate my symptoms- nerve pain. But you might be better off trying something like Flexeril or Tramadol. My opinions should not substitute anything your surgeon or PCP tells you however. You should get their opinion.
