I find it odd...

I find it a bit odd that my surgeons office does not do lab work to check for deficiencies until 6 months post op. I wonder why they wait so long. How long were you post op before you had labs done. I don't think I'm comfortable waiting 6 months for them to finally do labs & then say "Oh by the way it looks like you should or could of used increasing or decreasing this the past 6 months". That would highly tick me off. What do y'all think?

Most docs seem to do labs at three months out, but some do wait for six months and a few even want to wait for a year.  Personally, I wouldn't be real comfortable waiting six months either.  You can call your doc and ask him to order labs sooner.  If he says he doesn't think it's necessary, I would just say something like, "I understand, but I would really feel much more comfortable.  Would you please write an order for me?"

Yeah I will most likely ask to have them done sooner. The fact that I had passed a B12 in the toilet whole & him showing me my CAT scan last Wednesday showing a whole calcium citrate pill in my rectum, I think I might have some absorption issues & I care too much about my health to go to far without knowing what my levels are.

My surgeon ordered labs for me to have the report sent to him right before my 3mth visit. At that time it showed my protein and iron were low. When I went for my 6mth visit a week ago I asked him if it was time to check my labs he said not until my 1yr visit. I told him that since my last results were low then I wasn't comfortable waiting another 6mths for labs. He didn't put up any fuss he just wrote me the lab orders.

Yeah, I go back to see him on the 23rd of May & I will ask to have them done. I will be 3 months post op tomorrow. I have to stay on top of things or it will drive me nuts wondering or not knowing if I'm doing ok. My health is my responsibility & no one will fight harder for you than yourself.

I had labs post-op done at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, 18 months, 2 years then annually thereafter unless something is off.

Edit:  Thinking back about my potassium being low and reading one of the other poster's reponses I'm pretty sure I had labs done at one month also.  I remember taking liquid potassium very early, blech that is some nasty stuff.

sorry to hijack the post, but how long were you low on Potassium? I have been on prescription potassium for almost 5 months and I always test in the normal range now, but I take it everyday so it makes sense that it's normal. How did you know it was time to stop? And PS, if you ever have to take it again, I mix it with fruit punch flavored crystal light and I can't taste it at all! Took me 4 months to find something that hides the flavor.
