embarrassing questions

I use antiperspirant/deodorant under my boobelas. Keeps 'em dry and fresh smelling.

Let's see...embarassing questions....  I gotta think about this one.

Okay, here's one.
After my period, I am incredibly susciptible to vaginosis. I seem to get a flare-up every other month or so, always the week after my period.  I always assumed it was from using tampons and the weird imbalance going on down there during TOM.
I am adamently against wearing pads, so other than my usual increase in hygiene maintenance (which i**** or miss in regards to effectiveness), is there anything any of you know of to help keep that at bay? Will doctors provide an Rx for preventive antibiotics?

I don't know if they would give you preventitive antibiotics or not.  I'm not sure it would be wise to take antibiotics every month if you didn't absolutely need them.

Have you tried eating TONS of yogurt around that time of the month?  It might keep the bacteria balanced down there.

I have started taking probiotics in addition to my usual cup of greek yogurt every day, so we'll see if that helps. Didn't really think about that being a factor, but I guess it would play a part, wouldn't it?

I did some quick googling and from the CDC website, it looks like it's really just an overgrowth of a certain bacteria.  It's not necessarily a matter of "foreign" bacteria getting in there.  Apparently it's a common problem in people that douche, because that washes out the bacteria that is supposed to be in there and then the balance is off.

I don't really know if tampons would affect it or not.  It wasn't one of the factors the CDC listed as things that increased your risk - they listed douching and having multiple sex partners.

Hm.  Well, I don't douche at all. That stuff'll mess up your whole shebang.

I guess I should start turning the men away. They've been lining up and knocking down my door. I barely have time to pencil them all in. ;)

(I kid, I kid)

I was not trying to imply that you have multiple sex partners!

I guess if you wanted to know if it was the tampons, you could try using pads one month and see if it happens then.  But I'm not sure it matters if it is the tampons or not if you really don't wanna use pads.  You just need to figure out how to make it go away.

Not that this is relevant at all, but in the spirit of sharing more than anyone really wants to know, I've been using cloth pads lately.  I love them.  They are so much more comfortable than the disposable ones.

LoL! I know you weren't. I'm just having fun with this whole thread. :)

Cloth pads, eh?  That sounds interesting. I may give pads a try one month and just see what happens. Because I'm not particularly sexually active at the moment, my gyno thinks tampons might be causing microtears, which are allowing my flora to multiply too much in a bad way. Pads would certainly alleviate that problem. It's worth an experiment.

I bought them on etsy.  I tried a couple different kinds and then ordered more of the one I liked best.  I still use disposable pads if I'm gonna be out and about because I don't wanna have to mess with carrying used pads back home.  But I like the cloth ones  a whole lot better.  They are more comfortable and I feel like they keep me drier.

I only use pads and still get vaginosis every month after TOM. But I hope it works for you. I was told I may just have to live with it as an RNY bi product. (by a PA) I'm going to try the yogurt fix.

Thanks!

have you tried natural/organic tampons? apparently the chemicals in the regular ones can cause problems, so they might help if that's the issue
