Preventing Pregnancy Post Op
Hi Everyone,
I am almost 3 weeks post op from RNY and I have a couple questions. I am not trying to get pregnant this soon out, but actually trying to prevent it. I am in a commited relationship, but I am not ready to have kids just yet. I was taking birth control pre-op and was very successful in not getting pregnant. Now since surgery it is suggested bc does not always work. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do? Anyone here have experience with not getting pregnant until about 2 years post op? Any advice would be great!
Thanks :)

I'm on year 3 of my Mirena IUD (IUD with hormones, good for 5 years) and I LOVE it. Can't say enough good things about it. I also have experience with the Paragaurd (hormone free IUD) and it was terrible. Worst periods and cramping of my life. However, I don't know if you are a candidate for an IUD since you have not had any children yet. I would definitely ask your lady doctor about it. My mirena is fabulous.
Other suggestions I've heard for post op are the Nuva Ring, the patch or the Depo Shot.

It's the pill that might not work due to malabsorption. An IUD or the depo provera shot would work. You can also use condoms or a diaphragm, although condoms are not the most effective form of birth control. I actually got pregnant when using a condom.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.

My husband is getting used to condoms again... It's almost like we're dating!
