You're answering the important questions.  You know what information is important better than I do.  you can find your way around the inside of your head better than I can.

So focusing on others and ignoring yourself, including your health, lets you pretend that you'll all sunshine and that there is no darkness in there.  And that is pretending, because guess what?  There is darkness is everyone.  I bet you've noticed that while you've been busy taking care of everyone else.

What if you made friends with your dark side?  That would not diminish the sunny side, if that's what you're worried about.  But would it allow you to pay attention to yourself as well as other people?

I've tried to make friends with that side, and over the last year, I've had to deal with some really harsh backlash. Apparently, because I'm usually so bubbly and cheerful, when I let the Dark Me out to play a little in public, people don't like it and they tend to react rather viscerally to the unexpected new persona. So it can be very difficult to find a safe medium zone where I can be assertive without being aggressive, and blunt without being tactless.

What it boils down to is that I expect respect and kindness from people. And sometimes, I struggle with whether or not I actually deserve the treatment I expect.

It's kind of a head trip. Because I know, rationally, that I do. I'm a kind person. You'll be hard pressed to get me to intentionally hurt someone. I really only expect the same treatment I extend to others. But because I have a view of what occasionally goes on behind the scenes in my head, sometime I need some convincing.
