RNY vs. VSG
I have been set on RNY, but I met with the surgeon for the first time 2 weeks ago. And, she told me I should do VSG since I take ibuprofen occasionally. I think I can live without ibuprofen. I have been lurking on the VSG forum, but nothing is making that surgery pop out to me. I don't know if its because I have been set on RNY or what.
I guess, my real question is, what made you choose RNY over VSG?

I chose RNY due to diabetes running in my family and the fact that I am borderline. Not a guarantee to help it but the odds are greatly in favor of it doing so. Also, I chose RNY because there are more studies that show the long term statistics and effects of he surgey but sleeve has not been around long enough to have any 10 year out studies and relevant statistics.
I asked this question a while back also. If you search my name in the "search" box, you might be able to find it. A lot of good answers were given.

I had a long discussion with my surgeon about what made me obese. Some of the aspects of my disfunctional eating respond better to RNY. In addition, I had uncontrollable reflux, so the loss of the pyloric valve was a good thing for me. My reflux is generally under control now. There is a malabsorption component to RNY during the first year post-op, so you'll need to be especially vigilant about vitamins etc.
In the end, it's your decision, that you're going to have to learn to live with long term.
For me, personally, I'm glad I chose the RNY, and would choose it again.

I was the opposite of you and had gone through most of the prep time set on vsg. Then I realized that I truly am a sugar addict. I decided that with rny you have a major chance of dumping if you eat sugar. Since I have ibs, I am terrified of eating something that would make me feel worse than ibs episode and that would certainly be dumping! Maybe not a great reason but it works for me!! Also, rny is considered the gold standard of wls so I figured why not set myself up with the most solid option?! I had my rny done 10 days ago and am perfectly pleased with my choice! Remember that as you lose weight, the aches you use ibuprofen for should start to disappear
Good luck and make the right choice for you
God bless!!

Thank you, Tracy! That was great advice. I am a sugar addict as well. So, I know that I will dump if I indulge. I don't have ibs, but can imagine it isn't fun. You are exactly right, this is the golden of the wls options. I want to do the best. I do feel like I will have the best chance with RNY. I do realize this is just a tool, and I will need to change way of eating and my relationship with food. But, I fell I will be more succesfull with RNY. And, you have a great point about ibuprofen. I didn't even think about that. All the pain I have in my back and ankles should go away with weight loss. It might not completely, but being obese sure doesn't help the issue. I imagine it will get better for the most part. I will have to talk to my surgeon about that.
I love coming here and reading posts. I lurk most of the time, as this is my first topic. But, there is always great advice and everyone is always so nice. Thank you!
