RNY vs. VSG
No, you have no way of knowing IF you will dump from sugar. 70% of people who have RNY do NOT dump, so the odds are that you will not, and you should not rely on that to help you with controlling your eating post-op.
Also, depending on what is causing the pan in your back and ankles, losing the weight might not significantly decrease the pain. If you have arthritis in your ankles, the pain may lessen somewhat but will no go completely away. Arthritis damage is permanent and even with less weight on your joints the pain can still be considerable. I made the mistake of expecting my knees to get much better (and not need the NSAIDs after losing the weight) based on reading that a lot of people's knee ain went away after they lost weigh, but I should have had my knees X-rays before deciding on which surgery to have (or more specifically inquired here about how many got relief after losing weight and how many did mot), because I already had severe arthritis in one knee and moderate arthritis in the other (and the pain in the worst knee is not very much better than it was when I weighed 185 pounds more).

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
I had RNY because the sleeve was not an option five years ago in terms of any local surgeons doing it or my insurance covering it, so my choice was band (no!), DS, or RNY. If I were going to do it over again, though, I would have the sleeve so that I could take NSAIDs and so I would not have to worry about vitamin malabsorption and taking handfuls of vitamins every day for the rest of my life. Besides, once th caloric malanbsorption of the RNY ends, basically what you have is a restrictive-only procedure with limitations on absorbing vitamins. In my opinion, it is better to have a restrictive-only procedure without the vitamin issues than one with them.

I am having a revision from sleeve to RNY, because with the sleeve I had major refulx issues, I never, never besides pregnancy had a few times - but with the sleeve I have major issues, damaged my throat and regained 50 pounds back.. so I don't recommend the sleeve. sometimes it works for others, but for me.. it didn't wor as good due to the refux. Now i also have a hernia.
FYI, I stated what MY reasons were which was what the post was supposed to be about! I absolutely did choose rny to keep myself from sugar!!! Whether it is just the psychological factor only, who cares!! I do not intend to risk dumping because of my ibs issues so therefore, makes yet another reason rny was and is right for me!! I am well aware that doing doesn't happen to everyone, nor do everyone's aches and pains go away. I also stated for her to choose what is best for herself not why any of us did!!
When you said "you have a major chance of dumping" that does not sound like your own personal outlook on dealing with sugar... It sounds like you are telling the OP that (s)he will have a "major chance" of dumping, and that is simply not true. While it may be semantics to you, when someone is trying to make a decision between two different kinds of surgery, accurate information is critical, so for them it is not just a matter of semantics.

Dumping is so misunderstood and I'd say 90% of posts where people say they are dumping, they clearly aren't!!! If they had ever experienced it, they wouldn't wi**** on their worst enemy let alone themselves ...

Yes, you may be right. I just get so frustrated that surgeons are either not telling people how FEW of us dump (mine just said "not everyone" but did not tell me how LOW the number was... my only complaint with her pre-op info) or intentionally mislead people into believing that almost everyone dumps in order to encourage them to have the surgery. People need to have accurate information when making this decision... But I know that I am preaching to the choir with you, LOL.
I just don't want to ever not challenge the misinformation because there are a lot of people who choose RNY based mostly on dumping and the malabsorption (which they may or may NOT know isn't permanent). It is more for the OTHER people who may be reading it than for the person I reply to.
