I had ice cream....

So I totally blew the "cut back on the starchy carbs thing" tonight.

I don't feel bad about it, though.  It was a special cir****tance.  Seriously.  I have an appointment for the nerve block thing in my back in Cleveland early in the morning, so my partner and I decided to drive up there tonight and stay in a hotel overnight so we would not have to leave our house at the crack of dawn tomorrow morning.  Getting here was a trip, too.  As we were on our way out the door, I locked our keys - housekeys and car keys - in the house.  It took us a while to get back in to get the keys.  Duh.  I can't believe I did that.

So anyway, by the time we got to our hotel, I had low blood sugar and was insisting he get me somewhere with food FAST.  Right next to the hotel is a Friendly's restaurant.  I have not seen one of those since I was a kid.  I didn't know there were any left.

Normally I would have ordered a salad but I felt like I needed something more substantial before I passed out.  So I ordered a grilled cheese and fries.  I ate a little less than half the sandwich, maybe half a dozen fries, and then of course I had to look at the ice cream menu.  Because the fantasti**** cream is really the reason people go to Friendly's.  Have you seen the stuff they serve?

They had no sugar added vanilla ice cream on the menu.   And a million other flavors, all with tons of sugar, that I drooled over a little.  And these crazy sundaes with all kinds of candy and whipped cream and stuff on them.  My partner ordered this blizzard-type thing with chocolate ice cream and peanut butter cups, and is seriously considering going back there in the morning for breakfast to order this peanut butter cup waffle sundae thing.  For breakfast.  Seriously.

I had one small scoop of no sugar added vanilla ice cream with Oreo cookie pieces on it.  Did you know Oreos are not that high in sugar?  I forget exactly, but it's something like six grams per cookie, and I didn't eat that many crumbled up pieces.  To be honest, the ice cream wasn't that great, it was just OK.  But it was fun to get to eat dessert somewhere because I never have room after I eat my meal, plus desserts always have way too much sugar for me.  So it was fun.

Full of carbs, though, that's for sure.  But like I said, I don't feel bad about that.  It was special cir****tances and not something I do often.  And I do not plan to eat more ice cream for breakfast!  In fact, I have to fast after midnight for my procedure.

Awesome!! You wanted ice cream, but stuck with no sugar added...I call that a success in my book!! Good luck tomorrow with the nerve block!

Oh, the regular ice cream with sugar was not an option.  I know I'd dump and no matter how yummy something is, it's not worth that.  It does feel good, though, to be able to still have a treat and make it something reasonable.  Pre op, I would have felt I had to eat one of the biggest sundaes on the menu.

I think that's part of "normal eating," really.  For the most part I am in favor of planned treats, not things eaten on impulse.  But sometimes you don't know in advance that you'll have the opportunity to have something special.  I think I do need to be careful that I don't start proclaiming every day to be "special cir****tances" and using every small thing as an excuse to indulge.  and yeah, tomorrow will be a low carb day.

Thanks for posting this, Kelly. This is a great example of how to enjoy a treat in moderation.

I think it is funny how we all feel like we have to come clean about eating somethings that some of us consider a no-no or a once and awhile treat.

I knew the stats on the oreos, but I can't remember.  I do know that I can eat 1 but not 2 of those in a 2 hour time span otherwise I feel like crap, but I can eat almost a whole cone from McDonald's.  Go figure.

Yeah for ordering dessert and I pray that your block works wonders for you tomorrow.  You deserve some relief!

I didn't really feel like I needed to come clean about eating it.  Sometimes I do make mistakes and feel like I need to come clean, but I don't consider this a mistake.  Partly I just wanted to share because it was fun and enjoyed it, but also I wanted to let people know that it is possible to have an occasional treat and still maintain your weight loss.
