Needles in the back creep me out so much, I preferred to have a natural childbirth rather than have an epidural!  Well, not only because of the needles in the back creeping me out, but that was a big part of it.

 glad it's helping so far!

i'm wondering if that's what my dad actually had done, all my mom knew was that it was a bunch of needles instead of the 1 and i never thought to ask him. i haven't heard either of them complaining about his back since and it was 2 weeks ago.

I guess the number of needles depends on where your pain is.  Since mine is in the center of my lower back, they injected both sides.  If the pain had been on one side only, they would have only injected that side.  And based on where they pain was, they felt three disks were involved, so that meant three shots on each side for a total of six.

Well, plus they injected an local anesthetic first, like lidocaine to numb the skin.  I didn't even count those shots.  I don't think that helped much, to be honest.  The pain wasn't so much when the needle broke the skin, it was when the needle went in deep.  It felt like lots of icky pressure way inside.  Just a gross feeling.

I'm glad your dad is feeling better.

The things we go through to feel better when we are in pain...that procedure sounds brutal! I had injections into both SI joints a few years ago and they helped immensely. It hurt, but it doesn't sound nearly as bad as what you had done today. I hope you have relief that stays with you for a long time. I am sorry you have been in so much pain.

Glad you had a good outcome Kelly.  I hope it lasts, and you are able to find the relief you need.

And I agree about needles in the back!!!  I had an epidural for knee surgery, and it was wierd.  - And I did have 3 kids without pain meds, because I didn't want an epidural!

Hi Kelly:

I have been having neurotomies on L3,4,5- S1 for about 5 years now.  My first one lasted 8 months, one lasted 14 months and the others 12 months.  What a difference, when my hips start hurting I know the sciatica will start soon and I call the Doc and he sends me over.

If they have already helped with you block then that is a great sign that the neurtomies will be successful...

Good Luck
