How long after surgery did you wait to try milk or cream based strained soup?

I was discharged on full liquids, and had potato soup maybe a couple weeks post op.  And get really sick.  I think there was too much fat in it.

I was wondering about that, although it's on my list I was thinking it seemed awful heavy.

I would say read the ingredients and then decide.  Like an idiot, I had potato soup from a restaurant.  Restaurants frequently put lots of fat and sugar in stuff because they want it to taste really yummy.  Taste is their priority usually, not health.  I'm sure someone could make a potato soup that would work just fine.  But not the one I ate!  I learned after a couple mistakes like that to always, always, always find out what is in the food I am eating.

I also recommend eating only a few bites of a new food, especially one you're not too sure about.  If you eat three bites of potato soup and your pouch doesn't like it, it's probably not going to make you as miserable as it would if you'd eaten half a cup.

I was able to have creamed soups as soon as I was released out of the hospital.  I had a clam chowder soup at hand last night for dinner about half of it and everything seemed to go down fine. :) I don't really like potato soup so I haven't tried that.  I did have some Cream of Celery soup and that seemed to go down fine as well the first week out.

@Kelly, my plan says fat free cream based soup, definitely not restaurant.

I guess I'll just have to be brave and try it.

I don't know how you get a no fat crm based soup, I was told I could do up to 5 grms of fat and sugar.
My protein drink is milk based and I have never had any trouble with it ( thank goodness)
I make my soups creamy by adding FAGE 0% yogurt, my husband doesn't even know the difference

I think they may be low fat, they are the Campbell with the green heart healthy label. And you make with skim milk.

Is it possible to use a substitute, like unsweetened almond, soy or hemp milk?
