please, please, please, stay off the scale for a while

This is mainly for those that are newly post op.  I know you're eager to see the numbers on the scale go down.  But you won't go down in numbers every day.  Some days you'll stay the same.  You  might even go up a bit occasionally.  Getting on the scale every day, or several times a day, will NOT make the pounds come off faster.

Getting on the scale often might make you sad, depressed, discouraged, anxious, fearful, feel like a failure, cry, angry, feel like giving up and other unpleasant things to deal with.  But it will not make you lose weight faster.

Why not stay off the scale for a while so you can concentrate on following your plan without all the added stress of watching the scale and letting it dictate how you feel?

Newbies, please listen to Kelly's advice.
Additional advice. Weigh yourself once a week or month. Choose one day and stick to it. Also, a 'dry' weight is more accurate. A dry weight is gotten after a 6-9 hour sleep, before eating and after pee-ing.

Kelly,

I understand EXACTLY what you mean. I am two months out, and I must admit- I do sometimes get on the scale multiple times in a day. But, and I stress this is a BIG but....... not for the reasons of wanting to see the numbers go down.

I have been a serial dieter for many many many years, and I have ALWAYS weighed myself on Fridays or Saturdays. So when I write my weight down in my journal that is the only weight that counts.

I get on the scale sometimes three or four times per day and just LOOOOOOK at the number. I mean WOW!!!! I am 200.0!!!!!! Can you BELIEVE it??? Just a few months ago, I was 275!!!

Looking at the scale during the week isn't to see my numbers deplete, it is a personal affirmation of what I have committed to and the progress I have made. Only one weight a week counts, otherwise I would spend all my time obsessing over it! Other than that one weight, it is all about how far I have come and how good I am doing. It is about looking at the big picture, not the last pound I have lost!

If getting on the scale often makes you feel good and inspires you and helps you, then by all means, get on it as often as you like.  For most people, it seems to have a negative effect.  But everyone is different and if it helps you, then get on that scale.

Kelly I agree with you 10000%.   I decided after my surgery that I would only weight at my post op appointments.  I have pretty much stuck to that theory and every time I get on the scale I'm pleasantly surprised.   I have gotten on the scale at home maybe twice.  I go for my  6 month post op in July and I think doing it this way is what is keeping me sane and happy.

I'm eating healthy, loosing weight, feel amazing and could not be happier!

Thanks Kelly.  I am doing my full week liquid pre-op diet and have not been on the scale.  I really did not want to know and after reading multiple posts about that, I've decided I was going to wait until I saw the doctor to weigh.  After my surgery, I'll probably stick to the same plan and only weigh when I see the doctor (of any kind).  I can tell just by how my clothes are fitting, at least at the moment.  I swear I've lost some weight because all my shorts I now have to wear a belt with or people will see my partner's business..  LOL

Thanks again for the advice!

I think just weighing at the doctor is a good idea, at least in the beginning.  You are going to lose weight, it would be impossible not to with this surgery.  And you will notice weight coming off by the way your clothes fit.  And going to the doctor will be really exciting because you'll get to see how much you've lost, and it will most likely be a good amount each and every time!

I got really attached to the scale, so much so I was jumping on it up to 4 times a day.  Totally worthless activity.  I was forced to break that terrible habit when I was out of town for 7 days for work.  When I came back, 4 pounds were gone.  That was pretty cool.  Now I am only weighing once a month.  I'll do my monthly weigh in tomorrow and see where I am and then the scale is hidden by my husband until next month.  It is totally freeing and fills me with confidence now that I am no longer a slave to the scale.  I am planning my eating and eating my plan.  I am exercising.  I am sleeping.  I am taking my vitamins, even my calcium now that I found my little cubes of lemon heaven.  I am doing what I am supposed to be doing.  The weight will come off in its own time.

It sees like most of the before and after pics I see are at 18 month out.  So I will worry in December, 2013 if I am not at goal.  Until then, just gotta keep the faith that this IS working and that the scale does NOT measure my success!!
