Now why can't I poop?

I know, I know... but you all are the only people I can talk to about these things!  My partner, who patiently listens to me go on and on about vitamins and labs and all that stuff, draws the line at poop talk.

I have been taking Miralax daily for quite a while now.  And for the last several months, I have had no trouble pooping.  The last couple days, I am constipated.  I've had two lengthy, um, episodes in the bathroom today and it's not over yet.  This is miserable.

But why am I having trouble now?  The only thing that is different lately is that I have been eating a lot more fresh fruits and veggies.  Shouldn't that make pooping easier, not more difficult?

I dont know. sorry. I'm lactose intolerant since surgery so whenever I can't go, I drink a cup of milk and that gets things moving quickly!

Sometimes too much fiber can be constipating especially if you no longer have a gall bladder. I have the same problem sometimes.

Really?  I've read that too much fiber can be constipating if you don't drink enough fluid, but I drink a ton.  I've never heard about it being a problem if you don't have a gall bladder, though.  And I don't have mine anymore.  Do you know why that would cause a problem?

I'm not sure why, but nothing digestive seems to run quite the same after you lose your gall bladder. I also drink tons of water and it doesn't seem to help. The whole fiber thing is frustrating. Can't win for losing.

You may be getting low on magnesium. Have you change anything - new supplements maybe?
You may be magnesium deficient, or not enough fat in the diet, or you not absorbing some calcium and that ends up in the colon more - and that is very binding.
I never too mirlax, but I do take magnesium with calcium, and take a bit more at night. (400-800 mg mag oxide in capsules). So far that works great for me. I also added 1/2 cup of raw sunflower seeds to my diet. The seeds provide oil, fiber and really help the BM issue.

I take 500 mg magnesium oxide daily and have for many months.  I had labs done recently and my magnesium level was fine.

I have not changed supplements at all.

I'm not sure about the fat.  I don't think I've recently decreased the fat in my diet.  I drink raw milk which is whole milk and eat yogurt made from that milk, so I get fat from those things.  I use olive oil in cooking which gives me more good fat.  Maybe I'll try adding flax seed oil capsules, though.  I have some on hand that I was taking during the winter for dry skin.

Have you upped your pain meds? I know your back has been killing you.  Can you drink a few sips of coffee or espresso? Those seem to be one way to get things moving. Fresh fruits and veggies should really be helping so I am at a loss, too.  I was plugged up for the first time this week since my surgery so I had three or four sip of an espresso and within 5 minutes I was on the pot.  I don't advocate drinking caffeine but I had to do something.  You are right, it's miserable.   Jane

I haven't upped the pain meds, no.  I typically take one dose of Vicodin a day, sometimes two, and that's been the case for several months.  I've actually taken a little less in the past week, though, since having that nerve block procedure.  For the first several days after the procedure, I did not need any pain meds.  The last couple days, I've been taking them again, though.

Caffeine does not have that effect on me.

I'm at a loss too.  It seems like I should be having less trouble now, not more.
