poll re: protein and labs

My daily protein goal is 100 grams and I almost always meet or exceed that goal. Strangely, my protein seems to be dipping. I had it tested at 2 months, 5 months and 11 months post op and it was 7.7, 6.9, 6.2. Albumin was 3.9, 4.5, 3.9. I cannot imagine why my protein would be dropping. I wonder if I should worry...

If you're getting a lot of exercise, you may need additional protein.  You might try to bump it up to stop the trend.  You don't want to get protein deficient, and your labs are trending in that direction.

I used to get a decent amount of exercise. Both cardio and strength training. But I have been EXHAUSTED for about 3 months or more now. Struggling with low blood pressure that just will not go above 85/50. I thought forcing myself to exercise would bring up my pressure and give me more energy but the opposite is happening so I am not extrememly active. Working with my PCP on the bloood pressure thing, haven't even addressed the protein yet. I figure I will keep up the 100 or more grams and see if the trend continures in a few months.

I needed to add salts to my diet. Lots of natural sea salt (I use pick Himalayan). I even added salt to my protein drinks, and to any mixes.  My fitness guru suggested that I ad creatine powder to my drinks - creatine retains water in muscle.
Low BP may indicate low endocrine hormones levels. Including thyroid, cortisone, etc.  My BP at times used to be 90/60-65. I did not like that. Now I am able to keep it at 100-110/65-70.

Thanks. Yeah, I have added salt and caffeine at my doc's suggestion. It is great to have those with no guit attached! I have a PCP appointment this morning. We will see where it goes. She IS working hard to help figure this out...

I get between 100-120g of protein a day.  My total protein keeps dropping, currently at 6.0.  Albumin, while dropping as well, is within range at 4.2.

Oh yeah, I remember you posting about this just recently.  That's pretty low for protein when you're getting that much a day.

That is what I am worried about, Kelly.  It keeps dropping, even though I keep upping the amount I consume.

Can you explain the relationship between the total protein count and albumin?  Should I not be too worried if my albumin number is within range?

As I understand it, the albumin level indicates if you are absorbing essential amino acids.

I just did some looking around online, and apparently low total protein levels can indicate liver or kidney problems.  Check this out: labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/tp/tab/test  At this point, I'm thinking I would not be worried about increasing your protein intake if your albumin level is OK.  I would be worried about what else might be going on.  Did any of your other labs suggest possible liver or kidney issues?  I'd give your doc a call in the morning and ask about this.  I'm sorry I didn't suggest this to you when you posted about it previously, but I wasn't aware of it.

Did they check your prealbumin as well?  That's something else that, if it's OK, suggests you are getting enough protein.
