poll re: protein and labs

I'm definitely calling my surgeon's office today.

I didn't realize that albumin was related to protein until you posted this poll.  Since the albumin fell into range, I didn't bother looking up what its purpose was.  My AST, however, has been out of range since month three as well and I know that is also an indicator of liver and/or kidney issues.

So, in essence, I've had two lab indicators since month three that I may be having kidney or liver issues, yet my surgeon's office has apparently not found this concerning.  I wonder if it is normal to have abnormal levels during the losing phase?

Prealbumin was not tested this time around, but at 3 & 6 months, the levels were both in range.

Thanks, Kelly.  You've motivated me to follow up with the surgeon.

I think it is rather common for some liver stuff to be slightly out of range when we're losing rapidly.  At least that's what my PCP told me when my alkaline phosphatase was high.  But I don't know which liver things and how much out of range is normal and what would be cause for concerns.

Let us know what you find out!

My protein on my labs taken last week was 7.9 and my albumin was 3.6. I stopped tracking my protein after my 6 month visit because it has always been good. I just eat protein first at every meal. If I were to guess I'd say I get around 65g a day on average.

I don't remember the lab levels, but my protein is always 69 grams or more. (69 from 3 protein shakes, plus protein from food)

Right now I'm having 1 or 2 servings of quiche, and 2 or 1 servings of greek yoghurt, plus generally something with less protein than those two food items. I would say that I'm usually about 75g on average some days a lot more, some days a little less.

My nut said I am supposed to get 69 grams a day. Based on what I have read previously on this site I have upped it myself so that I get 80-100.  Supposedly she came up with figure by using my height and goal weight.  Do you guys think 69 is too low?  I work out at the gym. I do weight training, cardio, and once a week bodypump.  My last lab 4 months ago had protein at 6.8 and albumim at 3,9.  I suppose when I get more labs done I'll see if I do need the extra protein.

My doc only checks my albumim which we've been trying for the last year to get up. At my two year checkup it was 3.5, at 1 1/2 years it was 3.7. And that's getting 120-150g of protein/day with at least one pure whey protein shake per day. I'm suppose to to get my labs done this month so we'll see if there are any new changes.

You don't get a CMP (comprehensive metabolic profile) done?  That include total protein and albumin, along with a number of other tests that are really important.
