Help! Calories and exercise

I am about 2 1/2 months out, supposed to take in somewhere between 600-800 calories a day. I am averaging 600-650 a day. I am exercising 5-7 days a week on my recumbent bicycle. Some days I ride 45 minutes and other days I'm exercising up to 2 hours a day. So my question is this, If I am only taking 650 calories a day and I exercise for 100 minutes, and burn 325 calories, leaving a net calorie intake of 325 calories, am I putting my body in starvation mode? I'm not sure if my gross calorie intake should be between 600-800 calories a day or if that should be my net calories after exercising. I'm confused because I've gotten contradictory answers from my health care providers. If today is a usual day, my net caloric intake will average around 300 calories.  I feel like I am losing slowly despite my diet and exercise routine.  I do vary my diet and amount of time I exercise. Please help!

Granted, I have not had my RNY yet, but I have studied the body and nutrition and "I" personally believe that is exactly what you are doing.  Your body is not getting enough to barely even fuel itself and with the exercise, it is straining all your organs to meet the demands.  I would go back to your original nutritionist and go over your diet with them and see what they say.... My husband is a runner and has done marathons for years.  I have watched him practice what he has learned about nutrition and we have to fuel our bodies adequately.... I think you should end up consuming the amount of calories you did when you first had the surgery and see if that will show your body that it is not starving..... Again, this is only my OPINION...GOOD LUCK!

Thank you. This is kinda what I was silently fearing. I guess I need to either ramp up my calories or decrease my exercise for the time being... until I can eat more. Good luck on your upcoming surgery.

First, I would say that you should talk to your health care team and see what they want you to do. I was told that I need to keep my net at 1000. So, today I'll be at the gym for about 2 hours and will likely burn 600 cals. So, I need to eat about 1600 to keep myself at a net of 1000. Easy ways I up my calories: protein shakes made with 16 oz milk (2%), vanilla powder, and 2-4 Tbs of peanut butter. Some days I want to eat more food but when I was where you are I couldn't get in enough but now, at almost a year, I can. I have found that if I don't eat enough I don't lose. You have 2 choices- slow your routine down until you can eat more, or eat more calories. I'm pretty sure you'll start losing if your not literally starving. But, like I first said, I would highly recommend that you talk to your doc/nut to help you make the right decisions. Good luck and keep us posted!

I am my own hero...I save myself one day, one meal, one bite, one choice, one challenge, one step at a time...
