Post RNY Hypoglycemia

I have come here many times daily, weekly and monthly (depending on what's going on in my life) since before I had my surgery in Oct 2008.

My biggest problem at this point in my life is dealing with my reactive hypoglycemia and not being able to gain some weight. As of this morning I am down to 103.5  .

After dealing with a few health care professionals that basically shrug their shoulders not being to help me, I have made an appointment at Joslin with a Dr that has studied this problem in post bariatric patients. I called today expecting to wait months for an appointment and couldn't have been more surprised when I was told that I could come in TOMORROW!!!

Wish me luck !!

Best of luck.  I have RH, but it is easily controlled by eating several small meals during the day.  And I do not have an issue with losing too much........I'm watching myself to make sure I maintain.

Good luck. Please share what you find out. I went to a doc - but left so frustrated with him. He had no idea what he was talking about.
Any info will be appreciated..

I definitely will!! I went to an endocrinologist who wanted me to go to the lab and eat a candy bar. Then wait until I had a blood sugar crash to "prove" that was the problem. I asked him what was the plan after he had the proof....... He said "I don't know, I will have to do some reading on that", REALLY?!?!?! Needless to say, I didn't go to the lab or go back to him.

oh my word, scary! I hope they can come up with a plan to help you stay healthy. I'm grateful to be able to control any RH I might have with diet.

OK.. Mine suggested i take statins that has slower peristalsis as a side effect - and that will get constipated but that may slow down the food transition - and the runs... - I do not have the runs..
and had a hard time to make sure I get BM... and my cholesterol is barely where I need it to be...

Then he suggested I eat pizza - "you know the carbs may be balanced by the toppings. And if you eat potatoes with meat - that will be OK... ".(yea - I don't think so - not how that works for me. )

Last but not least - he gave me script for steroids - that I was to take an night to avoid low BS in middle of the night.. when i explained to him that I do n't have that - but I do get RH - he still insisted I may try to take them. He told me that he is giving me the steroid to cause my body to be be insulin resistant... that I may gain weight and have high normal blood sugar... (induce diabetic condition)

yea - I am not doing that... I plan to do what I have been doing so far - very low carb diet - meals every 3 hrs and last meal of fat and proteins before bed - while i look for a better doc.

I may have reactive hyper insulin reaction - higher than normal insulin response to carb in the diet - and I am not sure if beside cutting a part of pancreas - there is anything that can make my body to make less insulin.  I hope I can find a doc that can do some tests and tell me what is going on and how to treat that - if possible.

you know, my dog is diabetic and has cushings disease. We overdid her cushings med so she now takes prednisone (a steroid) every day to increase her cortisol production and that does increase her appetite and blood sugar! lol

so I get where he is coming from even though I agree with you, why voluntarily take steroids if you can manage it with diet? just thought it was ironic that so many of my dog's problems mimic stuff going on around here

I can see his reasoning if I were hypoglycemic... but I am not ... My fasting BS is 80-90, and between meals on low carb diet is 95-100  I do not want that any higher...

My main problem with weight and not be able to lose what I gained was after I had steroid injections for my back and then my shoulders.  I took steroids and pain pills, could not exercise, was crazy hungry... and messed up my system...

If as I suspect - my fasting insulin is normal but it get into overdrive when I eat carbs - then steroids may make the situation even worse - not only that may cause higher insulin level  overall but cause insulin resistance - high blood sugar - endocrine issue (adrenal issues) weight gain, emotional changes... sleep disturbance, more hormonal imbalance (including thyroid) and so on...

And that still may not help when if I eat some carbs...

I agree with you 100% I don't think a person should mess around with steroids.  Thank goodness you know your own body to know you need a different specialist.  (I had to take my dog to a specialist, her vet didn't know enough about her adrenal glands, cortisol and the diabetes)

I'm telling you it is weird!
