I had an endoscopy back in 1998 to look for ulcer, when my GERD was first dx. I was not fully sedated for the procedure. I had to do a lidocaine gargle (numbing) before I was given Versed. I don't remember the inserion part, but I do remember the scope being in and relief when it came out. It felt like I had a big lump in my throat, like you have with a sore throat, and I couldn't swallow. I also remember I couldn't open my eyes or move my arms, both were very heavy. When I was recovery, the doctor was horrified to find out I hadn't been sedated enough. She said I didn't seem to be in any discomfort because of my vital signs during the procedure. I told her I was only uncomfortable for about 5 mins and she told me that the scope was only down for 6 mins! The next time I got scoped, I was totally knocked out!

Thanks Kelly, a good service for those contemplating RNY. I think someone (not me) should volunteer to develop some kind of psychology quiz for people looking into this surgery. Seems to me many are ill prepared for what RNY really means both in body and mind.

What kinds of things do you think should be on the psychological quiz? Like what things do you think people are most unprepared for, psychologically speaking?

Great questions Kelly!
You may want to add "stuck" instances and ways to alleviate (papaya chewables-NEVER water) and bowel obstruction symptoms/causes. Also a question about why children's chewables are NOT enough.
Great for every pre op to know. 2 years out and I'm still loving my protein shakes/bars.

Same here. I don't think I've ever had anything get stuck. I've never had foamies, either.
