D2 vs D3

do NOT opt for the less expensive form of dry D3--those in oil in a softgel

Dave, I know what you mean here.  But you can't buy dry D3 in oil in a soft gel - if it's in oil, it is by definition not dry D3!

What Dave means is to buy a dry tablet or a capsule with dry powdery stuff inside, not those little things that look like footballs and have oily gooey stuff inside.

I have run across several people in various support groups who thought softgel D3 was getting the full benefit of the dry D3.  This form of D3 is far cheaper than higher potentcy D3, so these patients think their saving $$$.  Puritan Pride vitamins has at least 4 different strength of D3 softgels, all packed in soybean oil. Yes, but you said don't get DRY D3 in a soft gel.  D3 in a soft gel CANNOT BE DRY.  If it is in oil, it CANNOT BE DRY.

For non-RNY folks, D3 in oil is actually absorbed very well.  That's because it is a fat soluble vitamin.  It just doesn't work that way for us.

Thank you VERY MUCH for posting this. I just got my labs back yesterday and my Vitamin D is low. Consequently, I was told to take 50,000 units one time per week for 12 weeks and then to switch to 800 units per day after the 12th week. I had planned on waiting til Monday to get a prescription and now see that that would have been the wrong thing to do! So, once again thank you Kelly!

You can order 50,000 IU dry D3 from vitalady.com.  It's not too expensive, maybe $20 or so for a whole bottle.  I think a bottle has about 100 capsules and I take three a week so on bottle lasts me something like nine months.
