How many calories/carbs should be get getting a day? Or should I say what is our limit supposed to be? I asked my office about this and they told me not to worry about them, just the protein. But I am a major calorie counter/ carb counter. I workout like crazy also..I am just curious. Today I have only eaten 630 calories and 89 carbs...I am still having a hard time getting enough food in, I am 6 months post-op

At 6 months out your calories are fine. I was on 600 at 6 months, 90  at 9 months and 1000-1200 at one year and thereafter. My doc said limit carbs to 45-50 gms per day and make them
"good carbs" so I assume fruit not bread. If you're working out a lot you can up your calories per day or fill in a snack mid morning or mid afternoon.

  • These are the rules I followed/follow:

  • *Drink 64 ounces Liquids daily (drink up to a meal, wait 60 minutes after a meal) (I add 2 packets sugar free drink mix and 1 teaspoon Benefiber to 2-32 ounce water containers)
  • *Must eat at least 60 grams of Protein a day (80 or more grams beginning at 1200 calories a day)
  • *Eat dairy products that are no fat/low fat
  • *Eat simple (fruit) and complex (vegetables, whole grains) Carbohydrates (I do not count daily grams)
  • *No more than 15 grams of Sugar per meal (more grams if able to tolerate-I allow myself up to 30 grams Sugar per meal from Simple and Complex Carbohydrate sources and also from Dairy products that are no fat/low fat because I do not seem to dump on Sugar)
  • *Eat 3 main meals (B, L, D) no further than 5-6 hours apart
  • *Eat 1 protein snack at 1200 calories a day at least 2-3 hours from breakfast
  • *Eat 2-3 protein snacks at Maintenance calories a day at least 2-3 hours from B, L, D
  • *3-6 Months After Surgery: I ate 600-700 calories a day
  • *6-9 Months After Surgery: I ate 800-900 calories a day
  • *9-12 Months After Surgery: I ate 1000 calories a day
  • *12-18 Months After Surgery: eat 1200 calories a day (I ate 1200 calories a day until 15 months when I reached my goal weight)
  • *18 Months after surgery (or when goal weight is reached before 18 months): Maintenance calories (BMR/RMR & Activity Level) (Malabsorption of calories lasts approximately 18-24 months) (I eat 1700-1800 calories a day to maintain my weight loss of 200 pounds at a weight of 131 pounds. My height is 5'4")
  • I do not participate in a formal exercise program due to Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis. I do move around a lot more and do a lot more walking.

every plan is different. at 6 months my surgeon wants me at 1500 calories a day. i do not get that much, but have been slowly increasing to 1100 or so. they only want me to ensure i am making healthy balanced choices and to hit the protein goal.

They want me to be eating fruits, veggies, whole grains, etc. I don't eat many grains at all, unless it's beans and starchy veggies (like pumpkin, sweet potato).

i focus mostly on whole food eating and avoiding processed foods as much as possible.

I am sooo THANKFUL for this site. I do not eat breads/pastas/crackers. I only eat the good carbs, because I am SO afraid of gaining weight. Thank you, thank you!!

I get all my protein in a day...80-100 grams per day.  But..the minute I eat any refined carbs my weightloss stops completely. I'm trying to avoid them at all costs but I am weak (sob)
