For weeks now I have been craving salt... I still do not get hungry but when I fix my food I want it to be salty... I have even been adding it to frozen meals! and they are loaded with sodium!! yikes!... I thought maybe it was the anemia but I called my hemotologist office and they said it wouldn't cause a salt craving... so now I don't know what it could be... anybody have any ideas??... I want it to go away because now I feel swollen and I know it has to be my sodium intake eve though I drink about 120oz water daily... TIA

Salt craving is usually a fluid imbalance caused by dehydration or vomiting/diarrhea.  Basically your nutrients are off and your body wants to replace them.  You are drinking a lot of water, so it's probably not dehydration.  Do you work out or sweat a lot?  Do you ONLY drink water or do you drink anything else to replenish electrolytes after a workout?  Try some sf sports drink maybe?

Since my surgery in Oct 20012 I have become addicted to sunflower seeds in the shell. I was told it was due to me not drinking enough water.

120 oz is a whole lot of water. Could you be diuresing heavily and thus getting dehydrated?

You and I should split the difference. I barely manage to drink 56 oz a day.

I'm not saying 120 oz will hurt you, but replacing electrolytes sounds like a sound idea.

eta Maybe you just really, really want a corn chip.

I was thinking the same thing; maybe you need more salt because you are drinking so much water, it's diluting your blood, making the sodium in your blood too low. Either try cutting back on the water or increase your salt intake a bit.

Thanks for the replies everyone... I do not extreme exercise so I'm sure it's not that... but I do only drink water (exception of 1 decaf protein coffee every morning)... maybe I will try some SF gatoraid (they make SF right?)... I have never thought that maybe I am drinking too much water... I only drink bottled water with Crystal light (generic kind) peach mango with green tea flavoring... I wonder if that is causing it... I drink between 9-12 (16.9oz) bottles a day so I am actually drinking more than 120oz... maybe I should try cutting back... but I just drink drink drink by habit now... I will have to actually train myself NOT to grab a bottle as soon as I finish one... Thanks y'all!

I crave salty food - i do use good quality - natural salts - with all minerals and vitamins.
Sometimes our body crave it to balance dehydration, improve - increase low blood pressure, and for adrenal (very important) functions.  With low BP - that most of us post op have - getting extra salt may make a difference between normal or too low BP.

Thanks for the link... It has been informative... I think I will make an appointment with my PCP just to make him aware of it... It's about time for labs anyway... I stay fatigued but assumed it was from being extremely anemic... but  with the iron infusion I thought it would help more... so a doctors visit couldn't hurt... thanks again  :)
