We are supposed to get in 2 teaspoons of canola oil in a day. How is everyone getting their oil in? I have not been doing this & my mother who is a nurse said that its very important to get it in for liver functions. I didn't know it was bad to skip it.

We need some healthy fats in our diet, but as far as I know those do not have to come in the form of oil.  And certainly not canola oil only.

I get healthy fats from olive oil, nuts and nut butters, seeds, and occasionally flaxseed oil capsules if I think I'm not getting enough fat in my diet.  I also use whole milk about once a day so I get fat from that.

Some types of fish also contain healthy fats, but I don't eat any meat.

Why does your mom think you must get fat from canola oil?

She isn't the one that said specifically canola oil, that was the Dr's office. She just said some form of oil or good fat everyday. I have some nuts here & there as well as fish.

OK, why does your doc's office think you need canola oil specifically?

How often are you getting some form of healthy fats?

That's what they have in my binder, not really sure why canola vs any other oil. I used olive oil before surgery. I assumed I was getting in my fats through the nuts & cheese & foods like that.

My surgeon's office suggested Extra Virgin Olive Oil as numero uno on their list.

You are getting fats from nuts and cheeses and foods. Call and ask them if they meant you HAD to have that oil in addition to all other foods.

I'd vomit if I had to consume raw oil.

Basically she is trying to make sure I don't skip the fats that I need everyday.

Never heard of anyone being required (or even suggested!) to purposely eat canoila oil.  I have never known anyone who was not able to get in an adequate amount of fat (if they chose to) from foods.

I get most of my (limited) fats from almonds or cashews, regular (full fat) cheeses, red meat, peanut butter, 1% milk, and tuna.

See this is what I didnt know. I thought I was getting my fat in through nuts & cheese. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something. I want the best results from doing whats right & thats basically why I bring it up. Just wondering what others are doing to get their fat in. Canola oil is just what my surgeons office has listed in my binder.

My surgeon's binder had a "suggested source of oil" is yours in a list of "you must consume this every day" or was it n a "suggested souorce of oil" section.. There's a huge distinction.

I realized at around a year out that almost everythign I was eating was zero fat naturally. I started changing things up with Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I never EVER eat "low-fat" or "no-fat" foods that are naturally full of fats.

I have some Extra Virgin Olive Oil combined with Canola Oil that I'm planning on experimenting with making marinades whenever I get around to looking up some recipes and giving them a shot. For now  I'm currently enjoying marinated artichoke hearts (33 oz, in canola oil, for $10 at costco) with my salads. 2 to 3 pieces is a single serving, approximately 27 calories per serving, with a lot of fiber, a good dose of fat, and some protein and regular carbs, but not much!)
