OT - I think my cat is constipated!

I have fostered kittens for many years now for a local animal shelter. We give cats who have loose stools or constipated some plain Natural canned pumpkin. They love it and it helps balance them out.

I actually have some canned pumpkin, and I know she likes it because I make this pumpkin spice cheesecake thing with Greek yogurt and I've let her lick some of the pumpkin before.  I thought it was an odd thing for a cat to like, but she likes almost everything.

I see this issue sometime with younger kittens learning to eat. When we note the issue, we use a bulb syringe and squeeze some mineral oil or a dishsoap/water mixture into the rectum.  Sometimes you can feel the abdomen area a 3-4 inches away from the rectum (on and adult) and feel a solid mass--indications of a stool blockage.  It may not sound pretty, but this usually works pretty well.  Keep the cat over a plastic tub or deep sink during this process. Sometimes you need to help lightly squeeze the area adjacent to the rectum to help "squeeze out" the sold stool. Dave

You know, I'm not particularly squeamish.  I used to work as a home health aide and I've done various things to help patients poop that were not too pretty.  But I feel sort of squeamish about doing that to a kitty.  That sounds like a good job for the vet tomorrow!

Larry and Ruby are ****ting machines.  They eat their weight in food every hour and **** out three times as much every half hour.  I say if they get constipated why mess with a good thing?  I am changing their damn litter box every day as it is.

My cats usually poop plenty, but thankfully two of them prefer to go potty outside in the summer.  I love summer because it means I don't have to scoop the litter box nearly as often as in the winter.  When it's cold out, they don't like to go out to poop.  Spoiled things.

I just don't want my baby to be uncomfortable after all she's been through.  I also don't want her trying to poop on my couch!

As others on here have suggested, fish oil should do the trick. Has Cayenne pooped yet? The poor baby! I'm glad  you're her mother. She's in good hands.

Oh yeah, she pooped!  She got an enema at the vet this morning.  Poor girl!  I felt sorry for her.  But he said she was full of poop and she couldn't go.  She kept trying this morning and it just wasn't working.

It really wore her out, she's been sleeping almost all day since we got home.

The poor kitty! I'm glad she got an enema and pooped though. I bet she feels better. It reminds me of when I had to go to the ER for 3 enemas when I had an impacted bowel! I came home and slept too. I bet she will be better tomorrow after sleeping. I'm glad she went!

I was just thinking of when you had to go to the ER for that!  Cayenne only had to get one enema though and I gather it was not as traumatic or painful for her as it was for you.  She was quite unhappy about it though.
