Staying on track with power outages

Not sure if anyone in the mid-atlantic had this problem but a few observations I learned in this recent power outage:
1. Yes, all your good food will likely spoil after 3 days and your husband's cookies/crackers/naughty treats will be calling your name. BUT - the power companies tend to restore power to businesses before they restore it to your home. So going out to eat for every meal can be a salvo. Maybe not to your wallet, but to your diet plan.
2. Pepco is just plain evil
3. A power outage as justification for going carb-crazy is just another justification.
4. Pepco is the devil
5. The 800 numbers for hotels don't do as good as calling the hotels individually. A call center doesn't know if the power is out at the hotel or if they're overbooked. Hence, our oddessy from Germantown to Beltsville to Alexandria VA. All in the quest to have a hotel confirmation honored SOMEWHERE in the DMV.
6. Hydration is key. Unless you want to spend the night in the ER. Where they actually have power.

Good point, the ER will have power!  And unspoiled food, though not all hospitals have much WLS friendly stuff on the menu.  Most will have plenty of sugar free jello, though!

We were lucky we have BG & E and we have a cool basement.  We have German shepherds so we weren't even going to look for a hotel.  I just kept the dogs hosed down to keep them cool and we hung out in the basement.  We did realize we weren't too equiped for an emergency and now we ordered battery powered lanters, solar USB rechargers and crank radios as well as  travel alarm clock so we wouldn't need to use or phones.   Is there anything you want to order in case of another outage?

I did miss my milk in my protein shakes.  I wonder how the boxed milk is.

We ate out one meal a day so we could enjoy a/c and have cell phone reception. Our work at Ft. Meade was out of power on Monday and we just had a half day on Tuesday so it has been a short week.

My husband came down with a bad case of the flu as soon as we had power back but at least we had a/c when he had a fever of 103.   My husband is a diabetic so we had plenty of protein bars and protein shakes on hand.

I hope you are nice and cool now since it is supposed to be so miserable tomorrow.
