Hot Crystal Light?

I was experimenting the other day, and decided to spruce up my warm/hot tap water with some Crystal Light since I was out of lemons. Well, I think this may help me get through surgery! I loved it! I drank 4 glasses of it (I usually limit myself to 2 glasses/day if I drink any).

Anyone else have any surprise discoveries that they actually enjoyed when you didn't think it would work?

I just gotta ask.... why would warm crystal light help you through surgery?

I think two things surprised me more than anything else (in a LIKE way, as opposed to unpleasant DISlike surprises)....

My stomach - I swear - goes delirious with pleasure when I eat either shrimp or RAW fish postop. I like some foods, but nothing sends my stomacch into paroxysms of joy like shrimp or raw fish.

Which is especially weird, because I can't tolerate any cooked fish postop. (I do fine with cooked shrimp or octopus though)

I've been noticing some people have problems with cold beverages immediately after surgery, so I like to keep my options open. Besides, I'd rather drink room temperature or warm water over cold (unless it's redonkulously hot out).

That's so weird about fish! Such a finicky pouch! LOL

Well I *LIKED* raw fish pre-op. I just didn't realize it was the ONLY fish I could tolerate after surgery, nor that it would give my pouch the "happy dance". I swear my pouch goes around ALL DAY after shrimp or raw fish with a huge smug smiley face.

My pouch is not "terribly" finicky. By that I mean it really only rejects two (good) things utterly.... pure undiluted water and cooked fish. I'm also lactose intolerant, and some foods make me ill (onion rings) because they're just too bad. I also dump and have reactive hypoglycemia, so my food-world is limited.

While I drink some things that are "cold" (right now I'm having some almond breeze milk), nearly everything I drink is room temperature. I wasn't too fond of cold liquids pre-op (a legacy of needing a couple of root canals for several years before having the money to get them). My protein shakes are always room temperature with room temp water, crystal light and protein powder. I like them that way, though sometimes I'll make a shake, then decide to eat, so I put it in the water. I've found that the powder mixes best in warm water, and clumps badly in cold water anyway.

It's good to expand your horizons and keep the options open for when you're post-op.

the only post-op "complaint" i've heard that never made sense to me was "I liked XYZ protein powder pre-op, but postop it's too sweet". That never made sense to me. It HAPPENED to me, but it didn't make sense to ditch a flavor I liked because it was "too sweet".... I just added twice as much water until too sweet wasn't too sweet, and voila, it was new-and-improved, twice as much liquid for my drinking pleasure. I used to drink 2g of protein for every 1oz of liquid, now it's closer to a 1oz to 1g ratio, and that works great. My liquid ounces and my protein grams are usually quite close.

 Lady Lithia,

Do you use unflavored protein with crystal light?

I generally use Syntrax Matrix Strawberries and cream:

with strawberry crystal light:

mixed in a paper cup:

stirred with a plastic spoon:
(so I'm getting a bit silly)

then poured in an arrowhead sport bottle:

This is 120 calories, 10 from the crystal light, 110 from the protein powder, 23.5 grams of protein, 1.5 g sugar, 1.5 g fat  and 20 to 22 ounces of water.

I have a water dispenser in my classroom:

I tend to top off the one bottle of protein drink all day long, then recycle that bottle and start with a fresh one the next day. I feel somewhat bad for creating so much waste, but I've balanced it out and decided that overall this way I get LOTS of liquids, and get all my necessary protein via shakes (and still try to get 30 to 50 grams of protein from food as well). My first three protein shakes of the day are full scoop, then I drop to half scoop. I also add my UpCal D to the beverage to get my calcium:

(sorry if all the pictures seem silly, I'm sort of in a weird mood)

Thanks! The pictures are actually helpful, now I know what the protein powder looks like, lol. :) I'm struggling getting all my protein so every bit of advice helps!

I had a lot of problems with cold water for about 4-5 weeks post op. Not sure why that is, but it HURT to drink anything cold. Good luck with surgery!

I would be very careful about how warm you make anything with nutrasweet / aspertame.  The chemical components of aspertame breakdown to a chemical closely related to formaldehyde(sp?).  That is why you cannot cook with it.  This may be old research, but I was told this by a friend who is a scientist working with the FDA.

Yes, I have heard that, too. I think if it's over 86 degrees F, that's when it starts changing.
