We are still waiting for my insurance to respond, but the surgeons office just told me that my attentive date should be August 1, 2012. I am so excited and I pray that we don't run into any delays because college starts back on August 14, 2012. If I do have my laproscopic gastric bypass on 8/1 should I be ready to start college classes again by 8/14???? Also I am curious how long should I have to be off work? I have a office job so no lifting. What is the average time before going back to work?

I think the average time off is around 4 weeks. I returned to full time work on day 14. I came home from work every day and had a long 3 hour nap. I don't think I could work a full day AND do classes for at least six weeks postop.

I took 3 weeks off and had an office job and a physical side job. I was fine with that amount of time. I could have managed at 2 weeks but was still really sore.

I took off 4 weeks and was glad for it. Although I felt well enough to go back at 2 weeks, the remaining 2 were good to make sure I got into the habit of exercising and following the meal plan. By the time I went back to work, I was on solids.

You should be fine as long as you are really careful with time management and you don't have too many days when you have to be there for eight plus hours.   Perhaps your biggest problem might be carrying a heavy backpack if you have multiple classes, since you'll have some weight restrictions.

I planned to take two weeks off, but had an emergency and had to go back to work on day 6.  I ended up working 1/2 to 3/5ths time for the next two weeks, gradually increasing my workload.  I was not at my intellectual best until I got on some solid food, and I had to really be careful about my workload.

Lots of people go back to work after a week or so.  Others need six weeks off.  You may have complications and need more time.

Congratulations!  I hope things go well.

I had just started a new job and didn't qualify for FMLA yet, and was initially approved for 2 weeks off. I could've used another week, but I didn't want to rock the boat and potentially lose my job. I was still very sore and it was tough, but do-able.
