Wellesse Calcium & Vitamin D3

They gave us samples of three of the Wellesse liquid products.  I tried two of the three (just because I did not want to waste them) and the taste was disgusting. No way I would have used that on an ongoing basis even if it was ideal calcium for us (which it isn't).

I second the suggestion of Upcal D.  I have used it for a couple of years in my morning SF hot chocolate for one of my three daily doses.  It is completely tasteless no matter what you mix it into.  It does not, however, dissolve completely, so if it takes you a while to drink what you mix it in, you will need to re-stir periodically.

The label says calcium citrate (as well as other stuff), otherwise I wouldn't have considered it.

I had this same question a year ago or so. I called the Wellesse and per a company rep (it is now on the website) the calcium citrate makes up 70% of the dose and the Cal. Phos. makes up 30%. So, when I used it I understood that 30% of the dose (300mg) was not a calcium I was absorbing. I also understood we only absorb 500-600mg of calcium a dose, so I took that into consideration when taking this. I think it tasted okay, sort of like a orange creamcicle but I prefer just tablets now as they are cheaper. Good luck to you. Don't waste it though, fini**** up and use it knowing these advisements or move on to another calcium supp.

RNY on 08/22/11 with

It has 100-mg of calcium per TWO Tbs. 70% of that 1000mg (700mg) is calcium citrate and 30% (300mg) is calcium phosphate which we do not absorb. So you are not getting as much absorbable calcium as you think.

The "so what its got other stuff" in it is important because some people will read that label incorrectly because of how it is written to assume that they are getting 1000mg of calcium citrate and that they only need one additional dose to get the recommended amounts rather than needing at LEAST 3 doses (which is 6 Tbs) to get the minimum amount needed. Additionally, taking tricalcium phosphate that you can't absorb can cause things like kidney stones which we are already prone to post RNY...especially for those that are early out and can't get enough liquids to flush this excess calcium out of their systems.

I didn't read in sarcasm in the posts...but your mileage may vary. I always advise people when they start posting on ANY message board/forum to "put your big girl panties on". The written word not as effective as verbal communication and things like tone, inflection, body language are not present so YOU might read or see sarcasm when the poster didn't intend to place any there. Such is life. Read the posts, take what useful information you can from the posts and move on. Trying to "chastise" adults about snark and sarcasm and being "rude" is really pointless and is really ineffective.

It does NOT have 1000 mg calcium ctirate per two tablespoons.  It has 1000 mg of calcium, some of which is ctirate and some of which is tricalcium phosphate.

Another poster said the manufacterer told her that 70% of Wellesse is calcium citrate, so that would mean that 2 tablespoons has 700 mg calcium citrate, not 1000 mg.  So if you take three tablespoons, you are getting 1050 mg calcium citrate, not 1500 mg.

I don't know what sarcasm you're referring to.  I didn't see any sarcasm, I just saw people pointing out that this supplement contains tricalcium phosphate and that we cannot absorb that.

I'm sorry if you READ sarcasm in what I wrote. I didn't mean it, however, as I almost always add [sarcasm] to whatever was meant that way, to indicate that was the intended tone.

Just because you READ a specific tone does not mean that WAS the tone.

But they perception is reality, so you may feel free to read sarcasm in anything you want.

trying to tell people that they should post in any way at all is like trying to tell someone to go find a specific grain of sand in the Sahara. I post very clearly. So do the others.

But taking the WRONG calcium can not only crumble your bones into the dust.... it can ALSo give you kidney stones. I really care about people, and to break your leg because you stood on it wrong isn't something to play with, doubly awful if you wake up with kidney stones, and you can't movve fast because you know the last time you did you ended u with three stress fractures in your hip. How awful to take something that is supposed to help your bones, only to find it not only didn't help your bones, it also gave you something excruciatingly painful.
