Gallbladder issue, I hope?

Im 3 years post op Gastric bypass. I think I may be having a gallbladder issue, at least I hope thats what it is cause the thought of having to live with an undiagnosed pain is driving me nuts.

I have pain on my right side just under my rib cage....the pain sometimes extends all the way across my chest to just below where my stomach should be. I also have pain in my back in between my shoulder blades. Ive also felt it in my chest to the point breathing feels difficult. Yesterday I started getting nauseaus and dizzy/lightheaded. I feel like this has taken over my life and its driving me crazy. My stomach cramps sometimes when I eat but not always.

I had a CT scan, ultrasound, and endoscopy and all came back normal. I saw my bariatric surgeon today. He is not convinced its my gallbladder. He wants to make 2 small incisions and go in and look around. I asked for a HIDA scan first. My gut tells me its a gallbladder issue. Any thoughts?

I agree it sounds like gall stones but if your ultrasound was normal, then it's probably not.

No stones at all.

Sounds suspiciously like gallbladder sludge to me, specifically sludge passing through the bile duct.  Of course, I'm not a doctor so take this with a grain of salt.

I also would opt for a HIDA scan before I had any exploratory surgery. good luck and keep us posted.

Could sludge be seen on a CT scan or ultrasound?

My understanding is maybe, maybe not. If you get sludge backed up in your bile duct, it can be painful, even if no gallstones are seen.

This link might help.

If I may chime in, I do ultrasounds for a living.
Sludge and stones can be seen on ultrasound. It is possible, however, to have one or both of those and not have them show up on an ultrasound or CT. I have seen it happen. Then when they finally take out the gallbladder and the surgeon cuts it open in the OR it's loaded with gunk. Sometimes they are just not visualized on an image.
The HIDA scan will show the function of your gallbladder, which I would definitely recommend doing before any surgery.
Do you know if your bile duct was dilated? You could have passed a small stone in your bile duct which feels similar to a gallbladder attack. Hope this helps.

Glad you're here, Sono. I'm convinced if all of us on this board pooled our knowledge, we could run the world. *cue up evil cackle*

No, I dont know if the duct was dialated but Im in some pretty intense pain with no idea whats causing it and I feel like its taking over my life.

It started over a year ago and the pain would come and go. I thought it was something I was doing to myself like a pulled muscle. Now it doesnt go away at all. Its just with me all the time
