interesting article about lactose intolerance

I came across an interesting article on lactose intolerance, and wanted to share the link.  digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/lactoseintolerance/

It talks about why people become lactose intolerant, but the most interesting thing I thought was the list of foods that often contain lactose that you might not expect to cause you problems.  Also, it says that some medications contain lactose.  I never knew that.

VERY interesting.

Some of my thoughts as I read through it...

I thought it interesting that they say that if it contains Whey, it contains Lactose...however our Whey Protein Isolates have isolated out the Lactose? Is that why the are called that?

Interesting that some foods that don't sit well with me are on the list of things that contain lactose. Perhaps some of my "grouchy pouch" days are more about too much Lactose (TMI alert, but constipation mixed with diarrhea is just intensely uncomfortable, when the body's mechanism to rid the body of something is blocked up)

Can our bodies utilize the calcium in milk? I suddenly wondered that. I know that the Almond Breeze advertises 50% more calcium than milk, but it's calcium carbonate and I'm pretty sure that's what they use to make it look white and therefore the calcium in Almond Breeze isn't digested.

I had it since I was a young child and school was horrible for me. You were given milk and not allowed to drink anything else so if I wanted to have something with my lunch it was milk. I was in pain every day of elementary school. All damn 6 years of it. High school sucked but at least I didn't have to drink milk anymore. Funny thing is as an adult I can eat some cheeses now but milk is still off the table.

That's terrible.  Schools don't do that anymore.  Actually, I think they are supposed to provide an alternative to kids that are lactose intolerant.  I taught preschool for a lttle while and we had a child that was lactose intolerant and we were just giving him water instead of milk at lunch but we had an inspection by the state and were informed that we needed to provide Lactaid milk for him.  So we did.  He had his own gallon of milk in the fridge.

I was diagnosed in elementary as lactose intolerant so haven't had milk for years.  Too bad the Dr didn't prescribe calcium supplements back then.  I can eat small quantities of cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt and ice cream  (never all in the same day).  I no longer eat ice cream but if I have 1/2 cup of cottage cheese one day then I will not have any other milk product.  I have found that I can eat 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt but any more than that in a day is out.   One half cup seems to be the magic number.  Heavy cream or milk sauces will give me cramps and diarrhea.  I was able to use Lactaid mil****il RNY.  Now it upsets the digestive system but I'm in hopes I can use it further out because I want to cook with it and mix my protein powders in it for extra protein.  The drops used for lactose intolerance has never worked.   Chron's disease and being lactose intolerant was horrible before the Chron's went into remission. I couldn't leave the house.    I still have IBD and auto-immune issues but eating small well planned meals do wonders for digestive problems.  Now if I could find relief from arthritic knees and fibromyalgia (FMS).  FMS started before weight gain so I expect it will continue with wt loss.  The arthritic knees came on after wt gain so perhaps I'll get relief there with wt loss.

Great article!

I am fine with most cheeses and yogurt. It's milk itself that causes my problem, but only after I've had a lot in a short amount of time. For me, it didn't start until my mid-20s.

Apparently it often starts as we get older.  We produce less lactase as we age, which is the enzyme we need to digest lactose.  I'm guessing that's because babies are meant to drink milk (breastmilk) but adults aren't really designed to drink milk, so as we age our bodies make less lactase.

I recently discovered I am lactose intolerant since surgery. At first milk didn't bother me, but over the last 6 weeks, I get super nauseated after I drink milk (doing the low sugar carnation instant breakfast). It last about 30 minutes. Nothing else does this. Lactaid pills help but not enough. I still get a little nauseated even with the pills. Guess I'm gonna try and switch to soy and see if that helps.
