This year - I can feel more side effects from it. Last year I was so tired and they were all together - this year... I have done 2 and 2 more to go.
Some people get side effects - others not so much. The side effects may be different for different iron they use.
I am getting iron-sucrose, and what I hear - that is the best tolerated iron by most people.
The side effects are 2 types. The iron - and the side effects of drugs they give so you don't get allergic reaction. (like IV benadryl, IV steroids and IV antacid). The whole process took app 3- 3.5 hrs.
The IV drugs - the benadryl knocked me out and I was groggy that whole day. I could function, but it made me tired. The the next day I got the steroids high... a lot of energy, could not sleep much.... that lasted for 2 days. Then came the after steroids low - one day I felt down and really tired.. (but you have that every day now - so ...) That lasted for 2 days... and I slowly started getting up ... and I had second infusion. Great. The cycle started again. Being aware what and why I feel the way I do - I could plan accordingly and even warn BF and coworkers.
Then the iron itself side effects - abdominal - even though I got the iron IV - but the antacid and the iron caused some indigestion and cramping. I had the iron on Tuesday and today is my "acid burns me" day, even though I am taking additional antacid and I try to take it easy.
The acid may be due to the iron the body dumps into the digestive track - the extra that will not keep - or a rebound effect from the IV antacid. But as long as you know it - and are prepared for that - (if may not happen to you) you can handle that.
For our body to be able to utilize the iron we need to a make sure our proteins level are good (iron binds to protein in ferritin) - so make sure you have that covered.
Also - really important - make sure they check your copper and B12 and folic acid. Insist on that. If you copper is low - even if they give you iron - you body may not be able to make new good blood cells. Same applies to B12, and other minerals.
Maybe be good idea if you don't get that - to ask for one B12 shot - unless you know your levels are very good. (>800).

I've had iron infusions which did a world of good on how I felt. Although I'm not officially anemic I'm contacting my PCP to try to get them again, my ferritin dropping significantly since last year. Looks like infusions may be a part of my life now.

I was able to go to work afterward (albeit groggily), but I take the subway and didn't need to drive. I would definitely not have been a safe driver on the IV benadryl.
I'd usually feel sore and have a little bit of joint pain for a day afterward, but after a few infusions I had so much more energy I didn't care! Good luck to you.
