It could be indicative of liver dysfunction.

This is interesting and informative: http://www.livestrong.com/article/263112-what-causes-elevate d-liver-levels-of-ast/

especially this part:

Bile Obstructions

One of the functions of the liver is to make bile, which aids in digestion in the intestine. The biliary ducts drain bile from the liver to the intestine. Bile duct obstruction with gallstones or tumors, or destruction of bile ducts by the immune system causes bile to back up into the liver, notes "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine" by Anthony Fauci, MD. This causes damage to the liver cells and the release of liver enzymes such as AST into the blood.

Do you drink alcohol?  If your ALT is normal and your AST is high drinking can be the cause of that.  I'm sure there maybe other reasons for a high AST.....but thats the only one I know.

High AST - I was told it had to do with high liver enzymes, which can be caused from drinking alcohol, taking too much Tylenol, or from fatty liver disease. This was told to me from a general surgeon. My AST levels are now in the normal range after losing weight.
