Question about posting a profile pic

I haven't uploaded any pics of myself or even an avatar picture. I have several I would like to use. Whenever I try to post a picture of myself, it says it is too large. I have tried cropping pictures and uploading those and I still get the same message. How do I resize pictures so that they are small enough (I'm guess pixel size) so they will upload successfully.

here is how i do it.... you know when you look in your pictures on your computer it shows you a preview? Right click on the preview picture and save as (then name it something like small) now your picture is small enough to put on your profile but you have not compromised the size of the origional photo.

then come on here click on change avitar and select the one you named 'small'...

You also may have to change the format of the pic.....basically just saving it as a jpeg format.(ex. Its_Me.jpg)
