Why can't we throw up post op??
So since I've had my RNY surgery back in 2008, when I've either been sick with a bug or been pregnant - throwing up is not possible now. With my 3rd pregnancy back in 2009 (first one after WLS), I only dry heaved when I did throw up, even after just eating. Only a tiny bit of food would come up, like barely anything when it did.
I am 8 wks pregnant now with #4 and have noticed this again when I started throwing up tonight. Why is this that we can't throw up anymore? It's more like just dry heaving or mucusy stuff? I've had the foamies before but can't throw up! lol TIA

I can throw up at will.................effort less.
I was not able to throw up "at will" until after I had my incisional hernia repair. Now, on the extremely rare occasion that I feel the need to throw up (like Saturday when I was at an office pool party and I ate one of those no-bake cocoa/sugar/oatmeal/PB cookies, started getting nauseous right away, and just knew it was going to lead to dumping if I did not throw it back up), I can usually do as you do... although occasionally I need to take a drink of water first.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
The problem with being able to vomit after RNY is twofold. First and foremost, part of the vomiting mechanism relies on the contractions of the stomach and your small pouch isn't big enough to generate enough of a contraction. Second, the other mechanism involves contraction of the abdominal muscles on the stomach to assist with expulsion and, again, your pouch isn't big enough for that to work as well as it did before (less surface area for the muscles to contract around) and because it sits up high, the abdominal muscles don't have as direct contact with it as they do with he remnant stomach.
Some people have more control over vomiting than others, and some people find that when they strengthen their abdominal muscles (via exercise or tummy tuck), it is easier to vomit.

Thanks for the information. I've never been able to vomit, either. Always wondered why. :)
