Well I had a picc line out in almost a week ago and I have gained weight not sure how long I have to have this in due to me not able to drink so much or eat all my protein .. Has anyone had a picc line and loose weight?

I am also scared if I start to get better and they want to take it out .. I would rather have it in there until I am 100 percent better

It is unlikely that they are giving you enough calories for you to be gaining actual weight.  Anything you have gained is almost certainly becasue you were dehydrated before (making your weight artifically lower) and are now properly hydrated (so what you have gained is jus****er weight).

I have never heard of anyone who did NOT lose weight with a line in, even when they were not TRYING to lose.

I had a picc line in about 5 months after my RNY until 9 months out.  They did not remove it until I was able to take in solids and fluids on a regular basis.  The amount of TPN I used and the nutrititional value got less and less as I ate more and more without nausea or pain.  Eventhough it was first first year post RNY I did not lose any weight.  As a matter of fact, I weight for the visiting nurse every other day and my TPN solution was changed based on that weight.  I had a hard time with this mentally as I felt I should be losing as it was my first year, but I was continually reminded that my body needed the nutrients to heal and it did.  After the picc was removed I still have a feeding tube to fall back on and it take my medications as they would make me gag, which would lead to the constant dry heaves.  The feeding tube was removed about 10 months out.  I ended up still losing over 100 pounds in my first year (I started at 264) and to this date really have to problems from my Picc line etc.

Hang in there.  I know the Picc line is frustrating, but keep telling yourself in order to be better your body needs the nutrients.

I may have had a few extra potholes along the way, but the journey has been good!

It's actually NOT uncommon for you to gain some weight while on TPN.  I was on TPN for about 6 weeks shortly after my surgery because of complications and gained back about 6 - 8 lbs of what I had lost.  My surgeon told me that because the TPN is so concentrated and higher in lipids that I could gain some weight or just stop losing until it was stopped.  Once I had my PICC line removed I started losing again pretty quickly.  I wouldn't worry too much about it.  They most likely won't take you off until you're able to at least drink clear fluids and protein drinks.  Once off my PICC line I pretty much started from scratch with clear liquids, full liquids, pureed foods, etc.

Best of luck to you!!

Peace & Blessings... Kelly
