Congrats Kelly on getting Isaac soon!!

What is the reason for your getting Isaac?  I am visually impaired but not enough to warrant a service dog so I know alittle about them.  I would bet Isaac is under 2 yo or around there...

BTW...I didn't know there was a charge for the service dogs....Several yrs ago there was no charge.  I realize that it is very expensive to raise these dogs.....

I see you had an RNY....I am just about there with all my Medicare protocol requirements to have a date or whatever the next step will be....

I had never considered the RNY due to my having had a Pancreas/Kidney transplant 9 years ago now....Considering the lack of absorption of the anti-rejection meds....But my txp doctor and my kidney doctor have both had pts who had the RNY with no problems so I guess it is a go go!!

OK, that is it from me.

I have PTSD and dissociative identity disorder and they are disabling conditions for me.  Isaac will be trained to do things like bring me my medication when I have an anxiety attack (I have meds that help a lot but often forget to take them in the moment), turning on lights if I am unable to walk into a dark room (fear of the dark is part of my PTSD), interupting compulsive behaviors, providing assistance during flashbacks, etc.  I can be more specific if you wanna know more.

I heard back from the program director and he is 18 months old.

The cost to raise/train a service dog is approximately $20,000 and most programs that provide dogs to people with disabilies use donations to cover the majority of that cost but also ask people to raise some of the funds themselves.  The typical cost to the recipient of the dog is usually anywhere from $1000 to $5000, but it  varies widely from program to program.  The program I am working with is a pretty small program and they receive less funding than some larger programs, but they also have a very short waiting list unlike many programs.

We have a member here on OH that had a kidney transplant.  Her name is Deb.  I'm trying to remember her user name, something like SeattleDeb, I think.  As far as I know, she's doing well.

Hi Kelly...

That is great news about Isaac....Service dogs are so wonderful.....I would see many of the service dogs at the blind-school I've gone to over the years.  I did learn that when a service dog is working (or has his harness on) no one can touch him as in petting....only when the harness is off....It is hard to not want to pet and love a service dog.

The cost you mentioned of a service dog sounds familiar....no one has mentioned paying it back for the wonderful education a dog learns....I am for that.  Just didn't know it...

Yes, I am interested in PTSD.  There is so much media out there to bring attention to it....
which is good.  Just like organ donation is getting alot of attention.

For myself, I have many nite lights plugged in all around the house so I can maneuver.  Do you have those?  They do help me...

I do wish you well and I know Isaac will provide you relief, comfort and security.  I would trust them with my life....

I met one totally blind fellow on the van that takes us to the blind center.  He was so abusive to that wonderful dog that I reported him and also said what I thpought of him.  Then, I went to a visually impaired and blind convention which had alot of seminars and one seminar was on service dogs.  This was maybe a year after I saw this disturbing act by this guy.  So I mentioned it to the service dog lady and she kind of brushed me off...Saying, we can't control what these people do to their dogs but had heard of this fellow.  I don't know whatever happened to this poor dog but I do hope someone spoke to him....I am an animal lover and have 4 cats!!

I have heard of Seattle Deb and will post for her....

TTYL....

That's such wonderful news Kelly!   I am on my second one.

the first was a golden retriever named Peaches and he was awesome.  I was given him as a pet and he pretty much trained himself to be a service animal.   He would open the drawer and bring me socks, take clothes from the dryer (his folding skills were verrrry poor, lolol), pick up dropped items, alert me to low blood sugar, and a number of other small things.   It all started as a game but he was very smart and extremely eager to please.

I have a springer spaniel now....he seems to kind of have his own agenda, but he does pick things up or bring me things,  help make the bed, and take dirty clothing to the laundry room.  He is, unfortunately not near as eager to please, lol.

I didn;t realize service dogs were so spendy!   I wonder if there are organizations out there that can assist you financially in obtaining Isaac.  I know they exist for service dog medical emergencies.
