Off balance after weight loss

A friend who has lost over 100 #s warned me about loosing your balance after you loose a lot of weight. She was right.

I went on vacation to the Grand Canyon last week. I was very cautious because I felt like I was out of balance, but I fell while climbing over a rock. I now have a black eye & bruises all over my rt side & scrapes all over. But I didn't fall off the edge. Just thank God I was not closer to the edge. My husband, parents, bro-in-law, & sister saw the whole gracious scene.

That is interesting as I am just one week out from surgery and having a little balance issues.

AS you lose wt, your posture will likely change, causing you to possibly have balance issues.  Lost of large fatty deposits will redistribute your wt.  If you get new tennis shoes, etc. practice walking in them slowly at first, so you don't trip yourself.  DAVE

I'm 9 months out and have terrible balance issues!  Around the house and especially in exercise class.  It's embarassing!

If I bend over to pick something up or pull weeds etc I have to be very carefull going upright again. Otherwise the entire universe spins round and round and I find myself on the edge of tople over.

I didn't really have this problem at my heaviest, then again, I was not really able to see my toes anyway. :-P

2 weeks ago, I lost my balance and broke my foot. The PCP asked me how it happened and I told him that since I lost the 130 lbs, I find my balance off. He said that could be, but your age is not helping either. I am 61 and the PCP said as you get older, your eyes change also and it is more about sight than balance. This is why alot of older people fall Just thought I would share. I don't know how old any of you are that are experiencing balance problems. This is setting me back exercising, so I guess I won't be expecting to lose too much weight in the next few weeks.

Our center of gravity definitely changes after massive weight loss. It takes a while to get our sea legs back, so to speak. I'm 4 years out. I still practice walking "normally" a lot. I've noticed lots of post-ops who walk funny. I want to make sure I can "pass" as an always thin person. I just want to blend in.

We were told to use a yoga ball when sitting to learn to use different muscles for posture. I'll be honest, I haven't been using it. I too have problems with posture and balance. Last weekend we went camping and I was cutting firewood and I totally lost my balance and went flying. I landed on my belly. Didn't hurt, but hurt my ego a bit. Lol! Gotta be more careful and I gotta start using that ball again!

I have noticed the same thing.  I take a class at the gym that does a lot of one legged squats and other balance exercises.  After 6 months I still have to stand close to a wall so I won't fall over.  It is rather embarrassing.
