so fummed w/ doctor - doctor won't let me be off of work (almost 5 weeks post)
As some of you know i had complications since my surgery.
Doctor feels he doesn't understand my fatigue and told me he won't even write me part time- full time.
He sugguested I see my primary doctor, I went in to see them - but they won't extend my leave because they didn't do my surgery.
I can't believe my doctor won't let me off of work.
Surgery on August 8th -surgery
Surgery on August 10th -went into the ER for hydration
Surgery on August 17th- went into the ER- almost died
Primary doctor september 10th- doctor said my surgeon appt has to sent up the ext. not her
Meet w/ Therapist today- she stated I needed to be part time.
Is this normal doctors give u so much of a hard time.
Really?? WOW

First, since I know that the rest of this reply is probably going to get somebody's panties in a bunch for being too harsh, let me say at the beginning that I do understand how difficult it is to have to go back to work when you just don't feel physically up to it. BTDT, and it stinks. I have had surgeries where I have had to go back to work when I still felt like crap.. Where I could barely get through the day (and spent much of the afternoon struggling to focus on anything other than my desire to be at home having a nap), and then came home every night and completely crashed... It is exhausting and depressing, but it is survivable.
Some doctors are very strict about how much time they will give on medical leave (partly because they have to be able to justify it from a medical standpoint). Many surgeons will not extend medical leave just because of general fatigue, especially after a surgery where fatigue can last for several months! I don't know what you are referring to when you say that you "almost died"on August 17th, but even that was almost a month ago now. Even people who almost die because of heart attacks or a bowel obstruction may be medically ready to return to work a month later.
I am not at all surprised that your regular doctor will not extend it since (s)he is not the one who began it, and just having a Mental Heath professional agree that part-time would be better is pretty meaningless. As a counselor it is my job to support my client. Even if a surgeon or PCP believes that there is no medical reason for a client to not be working, I will still support that person by indicating that I understand why they're feeling as if part-time would be better, or even agreeing that, in an ideal world part-time WOULD be better. Doesn't mean squat, though,in terms of an employer's short term disability perspective.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
Fatigue may last a while still. It's not uncommon to be really tired for a while yet. It took me at least 8 weeks to not have some amount of fatigue. I would sometimes nap on my lunch break and several afternoons after work take a nap.
Its very important to try to reach your protein and liquid goals, both of these will help with exhaustion.

I'm not surprised to be honest - we are all so different but I think the vast majority of people are perfectly fine to go back to work after a few weeks, even though they'll feel tired - I'll doubt anyone goes back feeling 100%!!!
You will feel tired for some time yet but it will improve day after day once you are eating full diet and keeping up with your fluids...
I think this Board sometimes gives us a skewed idea of most people's reality - most people don't post about being tired because it's normal and expected to feel so after this sort of surgery ... and most people probably don't have the luxury of taking extended leave afterwards.
Sometimes needs must!
