EXERCISE!
When starting to include exercise in your post-op life do not look at exercise as a means to lose weight.
Exrcise should be part of your journey to good health. Yes burning Calories is a benefit or exercise and if you burn enough then you will lose weight, but what happens when you are at goal or even worse you don't like the exercise you do but it burns massive calories. Also the machines are WRONG! you haven't burned the 600 calories the treadmill shows you.
A danger of looking at exercise as a way to lose weight is well if I do this for 60 minutes and burn X calories I had a slip up yesterday so I will do it for 2 hours and burn x times 2.
Exercise is a tool to get fit and healthy and if you make it part of your healthy lifestyle then the calorie part falls in to place.

Damn, so the bike that said I burned 37 calories doing 5.5 miles last night was wrong?!?!?

I always wondered if those readouts were accurate but I have been under the assumption they are not. I worry more about my heart rate, distance and time spent on the bike and/or treadmill. Of course, I am just now getting into really making an effort to exercise several times a week so, additional weight loss would be great but I am trying to get my "good" cholesterol level back up at least to a normal range, and in the process, tighten up some muscles in some flabby/flappy areas I am getting.
I would do more machine work if I had a clue what I was doing lol. Same with free weights but I'm likely to just crack myself in the head and knock myself out doing it on my own

Excellent post! I have seen many people go all out on exercise in the early days - to the point where they can't sustain it in the long term - life, love, kids etc can get in the way of hours of gym etc for a lot of us ...
However, we can all get off the couch and walk the dog, go for a run a couple of times a week, sign up for an xyz team etc ... which will keep us on the move and healthy for years into the future.
I wish those darn treadmill calories were true but alas
I used to read posts from a guy on another board who was using up thousands of calories (3-4K) in the gym before work ... errr, highly doubt that, dude!

Earlier this year a 2.5 hou session before work would give me about 2K burned and that was from my HR monitor that calculated burn based on my profile.
It is easy to get burned out or over train. I suffer more from over training and life just getting in the way but you know all about the stuff going on with my daughter and work.
After Augusta in 2 weeks I am going to reset and then rebuild my base and get ready for a better more injury free year next year.

Awesome thread ... I got to goal (below goal) before I was 12 months post-op and have been maintaining for 5 years 7 months now and make it a point to exercise 4-5 days a week .... because:
1. It is a great tool for health and fitness ... one of the members of my running club and who I run with is a retired cardiologist pushing 88 years of age who is so totally fit and never had any weight related issues I just want to be like him and his wife ... they are and 'awesome' couple ... healthy and fit...
2. Exercise makes me feel GREAT! there is an awesome feeling after a good workout that I enjoy..
3. I love to run and I love love love to swim .... I ran on the track team and I swam competitively in my country of origin ... I am sooooooooooo glad I can run just about the same now and have endurance ... I wish I had less problems with the bike but I found out that I can team up and have someone do the bike portion if I do the running and swimming portion of the triathlon ... I did not know this so I will find out more about it...
4. My team at work won GOLD (3 of us on my team) on a recent exercise/fitness contest that was held ... WOOT ...
I find great pleasure in being able to be mobile and to be able to exercise whereas my mobility was impaired by my weight. I have these new biking shorts and waiting for 'another seat' that coach ordered for me to tackle the bike again .... I even have problems doing spin ... after 15 min the ****ygeal pain is so intense I just give up... then I think my bike is just too big or too tall ... I am just scared to fall off of it ... to think I love bike riding ... I have to overcome this issue with the bike somehow LOL
