Do most people have complications or not?

No, most people don't have issues... but I think it's very important to educate yourself on what can "go wrong" (small complications)  I went into the surgery thinking everything would be howdy doody and wound up with complications I was not expecting.  I'm fine- it was nothing life threatening, but complications do happen.

I think that I would have prepared myself for drains, pain, feeling a lot weaker than anticipated, low energy, and the possibility of infection.

I made the same mistake of going on utube and the internet before my surgery this past Monday. I worked myself up so bad that I had to go to my primary care doctor for anti anxiety meds just to get some sleep. do yourself a favor now and going forward and stick with this web site. Tons of very good info. Also, really just pay attention to what your doctor tells you and your support team. Walk, sip, sip, sip water. Get in as much liquid protein as possible and rest. Walk to move that post op gas. Very painful. Once you let it out, the pain is much less. As for your left side pain, hold the muscle by the opening with a pillow or open palm hand. Helps the muscle spasm pain when rising and walking. Pretty much common sense.  I really can't believe now how crazy I was before the surgery. You really will be amazed. Once your anesthesiologist gets ahold of you, it's sweet dreams! I still can't believe I had the guts to do this, but my sugar is down to normal numbers and I feel better each day. Stay strong. a little prayer/meditation helps too.

best of luck to you, my surgery is also scheduled for the same day :) and I have the very same concerns. nice to read all the positive information, it helps.  I just keep thinking a better life is ahead, and the risks of NOT doing this surgery are greater, from a health perspective.

I have decided from reading these posts, NOT to go on youtube  for further research

I read some of that stuff preop but I chose to ignore it because I knew I was doing the best thing for me.. I I would take things as they came if they did. Just remember how good you'll feel with the weight loss. We are all behind you!!

I'm sure it has been said... but people usually only post when they're having problems and need help or need to vent. People with no problems don't go posting on the internet about how great it is. Usually. So what you will find is skewed to that.

I had a rough recovery, but I had a BMI of 63.3 and was one of the most super morbidly obese patients of my surgeon. I think he once had a patient with a BMI of 70 and the guy was basically a dead man walking before he asked for help. Gastric Bypass was a hail mary pass, and he took it... and it still didn't work. He died some time later. He had severe diabetes, heart problems, you name it. That was the only patient my surgeon has lost. And it wasn't the surgery really, his body was already done for.

So, I went home on oxygen and took awhile to recover. I didn't go to work or anything for over a month. But I've had no complications since and I now I have a BMI of 29 and I reached this weight around a year and half out and have kept it off with no problems.

Think of it this way---people who have complications have something they need to talk about, so you're going to see a lot of posts from them. People who DON'T have complications---the vast majority---rarely post just to say "Hey, I had surgery and nothing bad happened."

I had surgery 9/11 and had no surgical complications. I also had no pain the day following surgeryy and haven't had any at all. I don't even feel like I had surgery. I was scared too and read some horror stories. Got a little cold feet but then kept realizing I was doing this for my health and to live longer. I wanted to be free of diabetes because it was slowly killing me. Right after surgery I was no longer diabetic. According to my surgeon, I am cured. I did read that some people say they are in remission but I like to think I have been cured. Keep a positive outlook it will go fine. The majority of us do not have complications.
