2 week liquid diet

Tomorrow I am starting a 2 week liquid diet, the standard one which will include protein drinks, sf jello, sf Popsicles, chicken broth you get the idea. My surgery date isn't even scheduled yet...

I am doing this diet to test myself to see if I have the kind of restraint and self control it takes to have my RNY. Has anyone else done this? Just wondering because all my friends and family think I've gone off my rocker. Thanks in advance.

Haha, nope, and I didn't have a liquid diet before at all. For some reason my surgeon doesn't want that, as he wants our systems "moving" right after, so I had no pre op diet at all... But I was of course on the liquid diet for 2 weeks after... But I wouldn't have been able to eat anything other then jello, apple sauce etc anyways due to the pain and discomfort of recovery. But kodo's to you! It won't hurt to try! Good luck!

My surgeon wants me to lose 10 lbs before surgery and she wants me to shrink my liver a little (lucky me) did you have trouble adjusting to the new way of eating?

thanks for the kudos!

The liquid 2 weeks was pretty easy afterwords, only because I wouldn't have been able to eat anything else, it wasn't a matter of will power or what have you. Moving to the soft was pretty easy as well. The only step that took me forever to be comfortable with was moving to solids! I felt like no matter how much I would chew, it didn't like the feeling of it reaching my pouch and I developed a fear of swallowing! I stayed on purée and soft right until 5 or 6 months out, and finally it felt normal to eat. But even now, 8 months out, I take such tiny bites, which I guess is a good thing, I don't miss the feeling of big bites at all! I am so used to little bites and chew chew chew, and it taking me 30 min to eat small amount, it just feels normal.

I am going to have to do a pre-op diet, 2 weeks ahead of my surgery date per my surgeon. Since I will also be on liquids for a considerable amount of time after surgery AND since I don't have a surgery date yet, I am enjoying solid foods for now. I hear that a lot of post-ops come to really miss not chewing foods weeks out from surgery since many leave the hospital to go home to a full liquids diet. I know I can do this and since I don't have a date, I'm not signing up to be on a liquid diet ahead of when I need to. I can see pros and cons to your approach. Just don't burn yourself out if you don't have to be on liquids just yet. Once it's not an option, it may get tiresome to no end. To me, it's not appealing but I will do it when the time comes.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I tried it before it was required and I was miserable. When I "had" to do it, it was much easier. I guess because my mind new I didn't have to stick to it when I just tried it to see what it was like I felt deprived. When my mind knew it was not an option, it was different.

I don't see the point.  Doing a two week liquid diet pre op doesn't really show you if you have the kind of restraint and self-control it takes to have RNY.

In many ways, a liquid pre op diet is more different than things will be post op because post op, many patients don't feel hunger for a while and because post op, you have a tiny pouch so you get full on very small amounts of food.  Pre op, you do feel hunger and you have a big stomach so you don't get full on just liquids.

In other ways, the pre op diet is easier, because it's only two weeks, while RNY is for life.

The two things are just so different, I don't see how whether or not you can easily stick to a two week liquid diet will show you if you have what it takes to have RNY.

I did the two week pre-op liquid diet and I never cheated or strayed from the plan. There isn't a shot in hell I would have been able to do it on my own. Not only that but, if I had tried I would have failed and convinced myself that because of my failure I would also fail after surgery. None of that would have been true, so I think not only will it not give you the data you want bu,t it could actually be harmful to your process.

I agree with your family - liquid phases are horrible and I can't imagine there EVER being a reason to do it if I didn't have to

If you want to "practice" why not start eating as you will be doing so for the rest of your life - protein first, veggies next, then a small portion of complex carbs?   You will do yourself more of a favour with this than liquids - which is such a short phase of your new lifestyle ...

More people struggle with the long term stuff because THAT's where you will need good habits and control - logging your food, taking your vitamins, not drinking 30 mins after etc.   If you can do that you are far more likely to be successful than being able to subsist on protein shakes for a couple of weeks~

Thank you everyone for all the advice, I think I'm gonna save all my protein shakes and Popsicles and wait until I actually have to do the diet! In the mean time I will focus more on the long term changes to my lifestyle that I will need to implement.
