interesting but scary documentary about the FDA

I watched this documentary this morning.

topdocumentaryfilms.com/war-on-health/

It's about how the FDA works to restrict consumer access to natural products, like raw milk, organic food, vitamins and herbs.  It's not about protecting people from unsafe food, supplements and drugs.  It's about helping big pharmaceutical companies make money.

Here's one scary story from the documentary.  A group of cherry growers had a website and on that website, they included a link to the Harvard Medical School website, whi*****luded some information about how cherries were beneficial to people with gout.  The FDA went to the cherry growers, literally knocked down their door with their guns drawn, and demanded they remove this link from their website because it was akin to "making health claims" and the FDA does not permit food/vitamin/supplement companies to make health claims because if you make health claims about a food/vitamin/supplement, somehow that magically transforms that item into a drug.  Since those "drugs" have not received  FDA approval, you would then be selling or marketing an unapproved drug, which is illegal.  Whether or not the health claims are proven doesn't matter.  If you sell cherries, you are not allowed to tell your customers about the benefits of eating cherries.

Doctors can prescribe off label.  Drug companies don't prescribe drugs, they just manufacture and sell them.  Once a drug has been approved by the FDA, doctors can prescribe it however they like.

Most drugs prescribed to children, for instance, have never been tested in children and have not been proven safe or effective in children.  Drug companies are not allowed to tell doctors that these drugs are safe or effective for children, but they are allowed to visit pediatricians (who of course only treat children), to give them free samples of these drugs, to buy them lunch, to give them all sorts of "goodies," etc.  The pediatricians are then allowed to prescribe these drugs to children.

The laws reguarding gifts, luncheons, and incentives are changing. In NJ the are really cracking down - I don't know if it is federal or a NJ regulation but certain disclosures now have to be made. I know for hospitals we are no longer allowed to have vendors come in from and give us anything for listening to their sales pitch, education session or whatever label you want to put on it.
This is definitely a good thing!
But, do you know what year that video was made? Seems like the vitamin/mineral world - like you said drug companies all spout some type of benefit of their product without having it yanked from the market.

Looks like it was made this year.

Yeah, drug companies can spout benefits of their product because they are "approved drugs."  They have been approved by the FDA.  If you grow cherries and claim that eating cherries has any health benefits (even if you can back up your claims by reputable studies), the FDA says your are then promoting a drug, not a food.  But unless your cherries went through the drug approval process of the FDA, you would be selling an unapproved drug, which is illegal.

Literally knocked down their door with guns drawn?  Does the documentary actually claim this? If so, they've totally lost credibility.  There's no way that actually happened.  A strongly-worded letter, maybe.

Yes.  The words in the documentary were "knocked down their doors with guns blazing," I believe.

The FDA and USDA have raided many companies, small dairy farms, etc. with guns drawn to stop them from selling vitamins, herbs, raw milk, etc.

OK, some quick googling finds me numerous articles about strongly worded letters received by cherry growers, walnut growers, etc, but not about raids with guns blazing.  So I suppose the documentary was exagerating, which bugs me.

The USDA has raided farmers that sell raw milk with guns drawn, however.

That is absolutely horrifying and disgusting. The FDA doesn't look out for consumers and they have no right to do this. It bugs me that government agencies, which are run by appointed officials who are not elected or accountable to the voters, are allowed to bully businesses and individuals. This is not what our Constitution intended and agencies like the FDA have limitless power to harass and regulate. It's wrong.

Thank you for sharing this Kelly. I am always looking for an interesting documentary to watch while I'm on the elliptical in the morning.

This is something that is such an unbelievable hardship for small farms. The large farms that produce soy and corn get massive subsidies, and the little place I get milk from gets a pittance. BUT they still have to jump through all of the hoops in terms of farm conditions and food processing requirements.

Meanwhile the FDA is completely okay with huge feedlots feeding cows dead cows (yes, they put beef tallow in industrial cattle feed) and pumping animals full of antibiotics thereby creating drug resistant bacteria. Our food supply is not grown or protected as it should be and we are a sick country as a result. Truly a shame.

But hey, just pop this $50 pill and you'll feel better! (My eyes just rolled out of my head.)
